Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Learned To Be Loud

Maya was sixteen and very good at being quite.

She was quite in class, even when she knew the answer.Quite at home, even when her little brother borrowed things without asking.Quite with her friends, even when her feelings felt too big to keep folded inside her chest.

People liked Maya because she was "easy".

Teachers called her polite. Adults said she was mature. But at night, when the house was finally still,Maya lay awake starting at the glow -in-the-dark stars on her ceiling and wondered when her voice had decided to hide.

One afternoon, her English teacher announced a school storytelling contest. The winner would read their story in front of the whole school.

Maya's stomach twisted. Reading out loud in front of everyone sounded like a nightmare. But later that day, she opened her notebook and started writing anyway. She wrote about a girl who carried words in her pocket like stones—heavy, real, impossible to ignore.

She didn't plan to submit it. She really didn't.But on the last day, with her hands shaking, she slid her paper into the admission box and walked away before she could change her mind

A week later, her name was called.

Standing on the stage, the microphone felt too big, the room too bright. Her knees trembled. Fir a moment, she considered pretending to be sick. Then she remembers the gril in her story—and took a breath.

As Maya read, her voice started small. But sentence by sentence, it grew steadier. The room grew quiet in a different way, the kind that means people are listening.

When she finished, there was applause.Real applause. The kind that fills the space around you.

Maya didn't suddenly become loud all the time. She still liked quite.

But she learned something important that day:

Her voice wasn't gone.

It had just been waiting for her to use it.
