Chapter 94: The Start of the School Season
After that little interlude, the Hidden Sand Village returned to calm.
Not just the Hidden Sand Village—the entire Ninja World had plunged head-down into development.
In the blink of an eye, another school year began.
"Coach Might, you're taking Guy to school, huh?"
"Haha, yeah! It's time for Guy to receive the baptism of youth!"
"Haha, then tell your boy to go easy on the rest of us when the Youth Showdown comes."
"Don't worry—youth has its own self-control."
On the streets of the Hidden Sand Village, Might Duy was escorting Might Guy to the Ninja Academy.
Thanks to Duy's boot camp, most shinobi now knew his true strength.
So in the Hidden Sand Village, Might Duy received the respect a powerhouse deserved.
Even the Kappa suit earned its due respect.
It had quite a market in the village.
Because it hugged the figure, boys and girls who fancied their physiques wore Kappa suits to show off.
But it wasn't the original design, and definitely not green.
The locals called the new version "tight-fitting training wear."
—
"You're Coach Might's kid, right?"
"Uh… how did you know, sensei?"
"Your clothes and eyebrows are proof."
"…"
"Report to Class One. See those four blond kids ahead? That's where it is."
"O-okay!"
—
The bustle at the Hidden Sand Ninja Academy was echoed in Konoha.
"Obito! It's the first day—get up or you'll be late!"
An aged voice floated up from downstairs.
A clatter followed from upstairs, then a voice that grew fainter.
"Grandma, I'm skipping breakfast—I'm late!"
"Sigh… that boy's always in a rush."
—
Konoha Ninja Academy, new first-year classroom.
The room was chaos, yet on closer look there was order: three camps.
Girls, boys… and one white-haired loner.
The girls' chatter boiled down to:
"Look, that white-haired hottie by the window—so dreamy!"
"Totally! Brooding and cool, and that beauty mark below his lip—deadly."
"I just want to leap into his arms."
"Hey! Don't hog him—I'm joining that cuddle."
The boys' camp summarized:
"Hmph, pretty face—so what? He's just a pampered pretty boy."
"Wait till the freshman spar; I'll crush him."
"Yeah, we'll show him."
"Girls are so shallow. Looks aren't everything—maturity rules."
So declared a boy already sporting stubble.
The rest: "…"
The white-haired loner's thoughts:
[Sigh… why do shallow women only care about my face?]
[Mom hid all my masks again—says showing my face reels in more girls.]
[But they only want the face!]
[Doesn't anyone see the soul beneath? Sigh…]
—
Soon the teacher stepped in and the clamor died.
"Roll call. When I say your name, answer."
"Asuma Sarutobi."
"Here."
"Kurenai Yuhi."
"Here."
"Kakashi Hatake."
"Here."
"…Uchiha Obito."
"Huh?"
"Uchiha Obito?"
"Who's Uchiha Obito!"
"Heeere~~~"
Just as the teacher's voice rose, a loud answer came from outside the window.
Crash!
Glass shattered.
In place of the window stood a goggled boy.
He glanced at the shards, then at the class staring at him, and gave a sheepish grin.
"Sensei, I didn't do it—honest."
"Do I look convinced?"
"See me after class."
"Okay…"
First day and already summoned to the office.
Obito slumped into the nearest seat.
As he sat alone, the word "idiot" drifted to his ears.
It instantly vaporized his gloom and reignited his fire.
He tracked the voice: ahead sat the white-haired kid—Kakashi Hatake.
"Hey, white-hair—was that you?"
Kakashi didn't even blink.
"idiot."
"Jerk—why you…!"
"Uchiha Obito!"
"Y-yes, sensei!"
"Daydream again and you're standing outside."
"Yes, sensei."
—
Afternoon, training ground behind the Academy.
"Today we learn Kunai throwing. Kunai are a Ninja's staple ranged tool…"
Ten minutes later the teacher finally finished the lecture.
"All right—any volunteers to demonstrate?"
"Me! Me!"
Most hands shot up.
Some had trained at home and wanted to impress the girls.
Others were simply eager to try.
Yet every student knows: the more you volunteer, the less likely you're picked.
The one who hides gets chosen.
Cue the conspicuous white-haired boy.
"Kakashi Hatake—front and center."
Handing over a Kunai, the teacher turned to the class.
"Watch Kakashi's form; in a moment I'll—"
Thwip-thwip-thwip!
Three impacts rang out before he could finish.
Instinctively he spun toward the target: three Kunai quivered dead-center.
Gasps swept the class.
"Whoaaa—bull's-eyes without even looking!"
Teacher:[I hadn't said start yet…!]
Since Kakashi's demo was useless as instruction, the teacher tried again.
"Anyone else care to try?"
This time no hands rose.
After Kakashi's show, stepping up meant either matching perfection or becoming his foil.
No one volunteered… until:
"Sensei, let me."
