Chapter 7 - CHAPTER 7- Ripples Beneath Still Water

Morning light washed over Azure Gate Town, but peace did not follow.

Before the sun had fully climbed above the towering stone walls, notices bearing the wax seal of the Flying Crane Merchant Union appeared like wildfire throughout the city. They were plastered on market boards, inn entrances, sect gathering halls, and the gates of the merchant districts.

The message was short, blunt, and devastating to the status quo.

The effect was instantaneous.

Martial artists nursing old wounds froze where they stood. Some clutched their chests unconsciously, their eyes burning with a mix of hope and disbelief. Small sects hurriedly summoned their elders from seclusion, while independent cultivators rushed to pawn treasures they had guarded for decades.

Azure Gate Town didn't just wake up; it stirred like a hornet's nest struck by a stone.

The City Lord's Manor -

Deep within the City Lord's residence, the atmosphere was suffocatingly heavy.

In a quiet chamber reinforced by complex formation talismans, a woman lay upon a bed. Her complexion was as pale as winter snow, her expression peaceful—far too peaceful. Once, she had been a formidable martial artist, a rising star of the region. But during a breakthrough, conflicting energies had turned inward, tearing through her meridians like a storm.

She had not opened her eyes in over a year. Physicians had failed. Alchemists had shaken their heads. Even the high-grade pills provided by the Great Sects had proven useless.

When the announcement from the Flying Crane arrived, the City Lord stood by the window, staring at the town below for a long time.

-"Send Gu Ren-Shan," he finally whispered.

His advisor bowed, sensing the iron resolve in the command.

-"No matter the price" the City Lord added, his voice low and dangerous. "Secure that medicine. If anyone stands in our way... treat them as an enemy of the city."

The Silver Moon Rest Inn -

While the city vibrated with chaotic energy, Jin Tae-Yun sat calmly at a corner table on the inn's second floor. Steam rose gently from his tea, curling into the morning air.

Around him, the chatter was deafening.

"broken meridians? Impossible. Only a Grade-1 Alchemist could"

"even those in a vegetative state, the notice said"

"the City Lord will definitely bid, his daughter's life depends on it"

"the Golden Crow Union is going to lose their minds"

Tae-Yun listened, his expression as unreadable as a mountain lake. It's begun. The city is already calculating prices, alliances, and risks.

Merchants were sharpening their knives behind polite smiles. Factions were measuring their gold. Yet none of them realized that the true variable the man who had created the "miracle" was sitting right in front of them, sipping tea.

Suddenly, a faint disturbance brushed against his senses.

The noisy tavern didn't go quiet, but the quality of the air changed. A man dressed as a common traveler entered and took a seat several tables away. He looked unremarkable relaxed posture, steady breathing, eyes slightly unfocused.

But beneath the surface, a controlled pressure began to spread.

It wasn't killing intent. It was a probe. A deliberate, surgical test of the room's occupants, seeking out anyone who didn't belong.

Tae-Yun didn't react. He didn't circulate his energy. He didn't even raise his eyes from his cup.

The probing force vanished.

It didn't clash with Tae-Yun's energy. It didn't rebound or cause a shockwave. It simply... ceased. It was as if the man's internal energy had struck an infinite, invisible void and been erased from existence.

The traveler stiffened.

His breath hitched, and a bead of cold sweat formed along his temple. He stared at his own hands, his mind reeling. What... what was that?

He hadn't sensed resistance. He had sensed emptiness. Like screaming into a bottomless pit and hearing no echo.

The man stood abruptly, his chair scraping harshly against the floor. Without a word, he turned and fled the inn, his face pale with terror. No one noticed his departure—the tavern was too loud, the gossip too juicy.

Except for Jin Tae-Yun.

He finally lifted his cup, taking a slow, deliberate sip.

"Even at this level, I'm drawing the hunters", he thought. "The city is more sensitive than I expected."

He looked out the window. Azure Gate Town sprawled beneath the morning sun—alive, restless, and completely ignorant of the power shifting within its walls.

The ripples had begun. And soon, the still water would turn into a storm.
