Chapter 12 - CHAPTER 12- The Rising Crane

Azure Gate Town awoke to a surreal, heavy silence that felt thicker than the morning mist. Usually, the hour of the tiger was filled with the rhythmic sounds of street sweepers and the distant calls of vendors preparing their stalls. But today, the city seemed to be holding its breath.

The mist clung to the cobblestones like a shroud, but the blood that had stained the earth the night before was gone scrubbed away by a panicked city guard under the moonlight. Yet, no amount of water could wash away the terror of what had occurred. Near the main city gate, a deep, jagged gouge remained in the stone, stretching nearly twenty meters. It was a permanent, terrifying scar left by a formless blade, a strike so fast it had bypassed the senses and so powerful it had cleaved a First-Rate Master in two as if he were made of wet parchment.

Crowds of martial artists, from wandering mercenaries to disciples of local sects, stood around the mark in a wide circle. No one dared to step on the gouge. They whispered in hushed, trembling tones, their eyes darting to the rooftops. The fear in Azure Gate was no longer about the Golden Crow's thugs or the corrupt tax collectors; it was about the shadow of a Sword Saint that now loomed over the province.

The City Lord's Humility -

In a move that sent shockwaves through the local government and the upper echelons of society, the City Lord, Hwang Guk-Ryeong, arrived at the Flying Crane Merchant Union branch shortly after sunrise.

He did not come with his usual armored battalion or his gilded carriage. He arrived on foot, escorted only by two personal guards who looked as though they had seen the end of the world. He did not enter as a ruler demanding tribute; he entered as a petitioner seeking mercy.

Inside the branch office Branch Manager Liang and Soo-Bin stood stiffly, their hearts hammering against their ribs. The City Lord stepped into the center of the room and, to the absolute shock of the gathered clerks, bowed his head deeply. It was a gesture of extreme humility a man of hi status lowering himself before a merchant.

"Manager Liang, Young Master Han," the City Lord began. His voice was weary, stripped of its usual booming authority. "I have spent the night reflecting on the state of this city. It is clear that the Golden Crow's influence was a rot that I allowed to fester. For that, I offer my sincerest apologies to the Flying Crane."

Manager Liang swallowed hard, glancing at Soo-Bin. "City Lord, you... you don't need to"

"I do," he interrupted, looking up. His eyes were bloodshot. "Effective immediately, the Flying Crane Union is exempt from all city tolls, warehouse taxes, and transit fees for the next five years. Furthermore, I have issued a Continental Criminal Notice for the remains of the Golden Crow's leadership. Their assets in this city their gold, their stores, and their three main warehouses are hereby seized and transferred to the Flying Crane as reparations for the 'unfortunate' disruption of your auction."

Liang gasped, his mind already calculating the millions of silver coins this represented. But the City Lord wasn't finished.

He stepped closer to Soo-Bin, his hands trembling slightly.

"I must ask... the Spirit Medicine from the auction. Was it truly the last of its kind? My wife... Eun-Seol... the physician says she has mere months left." He closed his eyes, his voice breaking. "If your Union has any way to procure another, or if the Master who stands behind you, I am willing to trade my title, my fortune, and my very life. Please."

Soo-Bin looked at the floor. He knew exactly where the "Master" was. Jin Tae-Yun was likely finishing a light breakfast at the inn, probably complaining about the quality of the tea.

"We will... we will relay your request to our benefactor," Liang replied cautiously, his voice softer now. "The Flying Crane does not forget its friends, City Lord."

City Lord bowed once more, lower this time, and left as quietly as he had arrived.

Silver Moon Inn -

At the Silver Moon Rest Inn, Jin Tae-Yun sat by the window of his private suite, calmly peeling an apple with a small silver knife. The Veil of the Nameless was tucked away in his spatial inventory. He looked like nothing more than a wealthy, perhaps slightly lazy traveler enjoying the morning sun.

A frantic knock sounded at the door. Soo-Bin entered, looking like he had just seen a ghost and won the lottery at the same time.

"Brother Jin," Soo-Bin whispered, shutting the door and bowing so low his forehead nearly touched the wood of the floor. "The City Lord... the Golden Crow... the whole city is in an uproar."

Tae-Yun stopped peeling and looked up, his expression neutral, almost bored. "The tea is getting cold, Soo-Bin. Sit down before you vibrate through the floorboards."

Soo-Bin sat, his hands shaking as he poured himself a cup. He was smart enough not to ask about the "Old Man." He didn't ask where Tae-Yun had gone after the auction, he simply placed a stack of heavy, wax-sealed documents on the table the deeds to the Golden Crow's local empire.

"The City Lord is desperate," Soo-Bin said softly. "He's convinced we are backed by a Transcendent Master. He wants a pill for his wife. He's offering everything."

Tae-Yun took a bite of the apple, chewing slowly. "I know. I heard him from the balcony."

Soo-Bin blinked. The Union branch was three blocks away. "You... you heard him?"

"Tell him I will treat her myself," Tae-Yun said.

Soo-Bin nearly choked on his tea. "Brother Jin... you? I mean, I know you are powerful, but Why help him so easily? We could squeeze him for decades of political favors first."

"A City Lord who owes me a life is more useful than a City Lord who is mourning," Tae-Yun said with a dry, sharp wit. "Besides, I dislike the smell of sorrow. It ruins the flavor of the tea. Bring me to her this evening."

Before Soo-Bin could respond, a messenger from the Union rushed to the door, panting. He handed Soo-Bin a scroll sealed with an intricate, glowing crest: the Golden Namgoong Crest.

Soo-Bin read the letter, his eyes widening until they were dinner plates.

"To the Honored Pillar of the Flying Crane: The Namgoong Sect officially recognizes your Union as our primary medicinal partner in the Southern Provinces. Any hand raised against the Crane is a hand raised against the Namgoong. We await the day we can host your 'Great Senior' at our main estate."

"Brother Jin," Soo-Bin gasped. "The Namgoong... the Number One Swordsman Clan of the Righteous Alliance... they just declared us untouchable."

Tae-Yun leaned back, a small smirk playing on his lips as Soo-Bin rushed out to spread the news. The Flying Crane Azure Branch had transitioned from a local shop to a Continental Power in the span of twelve hours.

The System's Reward -

As the door closed, the blue holographic interface flickered to life before Tae-Yun's eyes.

Tae-Yun summoned the tea set. It appeared on the table in a soft glow a pale, translucent jade that seemed to hum with the low, vibrating frequency of a distant storm. He poured a cup of the remaining tea into the jade vessel.

As the liquid touched his lips, he felt his internal energy become as smooth and clear as polished glass. It was the perfect tool for someone who needed to maintain a calm facade while hiding a storm inside.

He walked to the window and looked out. High above, on a distant rooftop near the city wall, he spotted a flash of lavender silk. Lady Xue Lan of the Mist Veil Pavilion was still there, her eyes scanning the streets with a predatory focus.

He activated his new skill Appraisal Eye.

A flicker of text appeared above her head, glowing in a soft violet:

Tae-Yun took a slow sip of his tea, the jade cup cooling his fingers.

"The Crane has grown its wings," he murmured to the empty room, watching the "Searching" status flicker over the frustrated Lady. "And I think it's time I showed this city what a real magic looks like."
