Darkness swallowed the mansion.
Not the peaceful kind of darkness that comes with night.
This one was alive.
Breathing.
Watching.
Rachel couldn't see her own hands anymore. The alarms had stopped, the emergency lights had died, and even the storm outside seemed to quiet as if the world itself was holding its breath.
Somewhere in the mansion, footsteps echoed.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Many of them.
Rachel's heart pounded so loudly she wondered if everyone could hear it.
"Raziel…" she whispered.
"I'm here," his voice came immediately from somewhere close to her left.
Firm.
Grounding.
Even injured, even surrounded by enemies, his voice still carried the same dangerous calm.
"Stay behind me."
Daniel clung tightly to Rachel's arm.
"I don't like this," he whispered shakily.
Rachel squeezed his hand.
"It's okay."
But she wasn't sure if she believed that herself.
Because across the hall, Lucien's silhouette was still visible in the faint flashes of lightning slipping through cracks in the sealed shutters.
And he was smiling.
Lucien's Invitation
"Well," Lucien said casually into the darkness, his voice echoing.
"They're here."
Rachel's stomach dropped.
"Who?" she demanded.
Lucien tilted his head toward her voice.
"You'll see."
Another rumble vibrated through the mansion floor.
Doors creaked open in distant hallways.
Metal boots stepped across marble.
Not just one group.
Several.
Raziel's voice dropped lower.
"Mercenaries," he said quietly.
Rachel felt fear rise in her chest.
"How many?"
Raziel didn't answer immediately.
That silence was worse than any number.
Lucien chuckled.
"Oh relax."
"This isn't the main event."
Rachel's breath caught.
"If this isn't the main event… then what is?"
Lucien's grin widened slowly.
"You'll see."
Then suddenly
A soft clap echoed from the darkness.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Slow.
Mocking.
And a woman's voice followed.
Smooth.
Dangerous.
Beautiful.
"You always did enjoy theatrics, Lucien."
Rachel froze.
Raziel went completely still.
Even Isabella's posture shifted slightly.
Rachel felt something deep inside her stomach twist with dread.
Because she recognized that voice.
The Wolf Appears
From the darkness at the far end of the hall, a figure stepped forward.
Lightning flashed.
For a brief second, the entire hallway lit up.
And Rachel saw her.
Selene.
She wore black combat armor, her silver hair tied behind her head, eyes glowing like a predator's in the dark.
Her lips curved into a slow smile.
"Well," Selene said softly.
"This reunion is long overdue."
Daniel gasped.
Rachel's heart nearly stopped.
"You…" she whispered.
Selene's eyes moved slowly across the room.
First Raziel.
Then Isabella.
Then Rachel.
And finally Daniel.
Her smile sharpened.
"Oh yes," she said.
"I missed all of you."
The Silence Before War
For several seconds no one moved.
No one spoke.
The tension was unbearable.
Raziel finally broke it.
"You're working with him."
His voice was colder than Rachel had ever heard it.
Selene tilted her head.
"With Lucien?"
She chuckled softly.
"Working with him?"
Her gaze flicked to Lucien.
"Please."
Lucien rolled his eyes.
"We're allies."
Selene shrugged.
"Temporary."
Rachel's mind raced.
"You tried to kill us," she said to Selene.
Selene smiled sweetly.
"Yes."
Rachel's fists clenched.
"And now you're helping him?"
Selene stepped forward slowly.
Her boots echoed across the marble.
"Oh Rachel," she said softly.
"I'm not helping him."
Her eyes gleamed.
"I'm helping myself."
Raziel's Past Returns
Raziel stepped forward slightly.
"You shouldn't be here."
Selene's smile widened.
"Really?"
She gestured around the mansion.
"You trained me."
"You built me."
"You created everything I am."
Her voice dropped.
"So technically…"
She leaned closer.
"This is your fault."
Rachel felt her chest tighten.
The accusation hung heavy in the air.
She looked at Raziel.
He didn't deny it.
Selene laughed softly.
"Oh Rachel… you didn't know?"
Rachel's voice came out barely above a whisper.
"Know what?"
Selene's eyes sparkled with cruel delight.
"That the man protecting you… once built an army of killers."
Rachel felt the room spin.
Raziel spoke through clenched teeth.
"You were never meant to become this."
Selene shrugged.
"You taught me survival."
"You taught me strength."
"You taught me not to trust anyone."
Her smile faded slightly.
"So I learned."
Isabella Steps Forward
Rachel's mother moved then.
Calm.
Precise.
Deadly.
"Enough."
The single word cut through the tension like a knife.
Selene's eyes slid toward her.
"Well."
Her smile returned.
"The famous Isabella Moretti."
She gave a slow, mocking bow.
"I've heard so much about you."
Isabella's expression didn't change.
"You should have died years ago."
Selene laughed.
"Everyone keeps saying that tonight."
Lucien chuckled beside her.
"I know, right?"
Selene ignored him.
Her eyes locked onto Isabella's.
"But if I died…"
She gestured toward Rachel.
"Who would finish what you started?"
Rachel frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Selene's smile turned wicked.
"Oh Rachel…"
She leaned closer.
"You really don't know anything about your family, do you?"
The Secret of the Program
Raziel's voice snapped like a whip.
"Stop talking."
Selene looked delighted.
"Oh this is fun."
She began pacing slowly.
"You see, Rachel… years ago there was a project."
Her finger pointed at Raziel.
"He was the prototype."
Her finger moved to Lucien.
"He was the failure."
Lucien looked mildly offended.
"Rude."
Selene ignored him.
Then she pointed at Isabella.
"And she was the architect."
Rachel stared at her mother.
Her voice trembled.
"Mom… what is she talking about?"
Isabella didn't answer.
And that silence was terrifying.
Selene smiled.
"The program created perfect soldiers."
"Perfect assassins."
"Perfect survivors."
Her gaze turned to Rachel.
"And guess what?"
Rachel felt her pulse spike.
"What?"
Selene's voice dropped to a whisper.
"You were supposed to be the final one."
Rachel's World Shatters
The words hit like a gunshot.
"No," Rachel said instantly.
Selene nodded slowly.
"Oh yes."
"You were never meant to live a normal life."
"You were the next evolution."
Rachel turned toward her mother.
"Tell her she's lying."
Isabella looked at her.
Pain flickered in her eyes for the first time.
But she still didn't speak.
Rachel's chest tightened.
"You used me?" she whispered.
Raziel stepped forward.
"You were never part of the program."
Selene laughed loudly.
"Oh Raziel…"
"You still don't know everything."
Her gaze shifted to Daniel.
"And neither does she."
Rachel felt dread crawl through her body.
"What does my brother have to do with this?"
Lucien smirked.
"Everything."
The Wolves Close In
Suddenly
Boots echoed through the halls again.
Dozens of armed mercenaries appeared in the surrounding corridors.
Weapons raised.
Laser sights glowing red in the dark.
Rachel realized they were surrounded.
Completely.
Raziel counted quickly with his eyes.
At least twenty.
Maybe thirty.
Even he couldn't fight that many.
Lucien clapped slowly.
"And now the party begins."
Selene stretched her arms slightly.
"I've been waiting for this."
Rachel's voice trembled.
"What do you want from us?"
Selene smiled.
"Not all of you."
Her eyes locked onto Rachel.
"Just you."
Daniel squeezed Rachel's arm.
"No!"
Raziel stepped forward.
"You take one more step toward her"
Selene drew a knife so fast Rachel barely saw it.
The blade gleamed in the lightning flashes.
"Oh Raziel…"
Her voice was almost gentle.
"You know I always get what I want."
The Final Moment
Rachel's heart raced.
Her entire life suddenly felt like a lie.
Her mother's secrets.
Raziel's past.
Lucien's return.
Selene's obsession.
Everything was connected.
And somehow…
She was at the center.
Selene raised her hand slowly.
Every mercenary lifted their weapons.
"Don't fight it," Selene said softly.
"This is destiny."
Raziel moved slightly in front of Rachel.
Bleeding.
Outnumbered.
But unbreakable.
"If you want her…"
His voice dropped to a lethal whisper.
"You'll have to go through me."
Selene smiled.
"Oh."
She raised her hand higher.
"That was always the plan."
And then
She gave the signal.
"Take them."
