The first explosion ripped through the underground facility like a warning from hell.
Concrete shook. Dust rained from the ceiling. The single bulb above Rachel flickered wildly.
She didn't scream.
She smiled.
Selene noticed.
"You think that saves you?" Selene asked calmly, adjusting her black gloves.
Rachel met her gaze, wrists still bound behind the chair.
"No," she said. "But it ends you."
Gunfire erupted outside the room fast, precise, brutal. Not chaos. Strategy.
That was Raziel.
Selene tilted her head, listening.
"He's improved," she said. "Still reckless though. Emotion is his weakness."
Rachel laughed softly.
"You're wrong. Underestimating him is yours."
Before Selene could respond, the steel door blasted inward.
Smoke poured in.
Three of Selene's guards dropped instantly clean shots to the head.
Raziel Moretti walked through the smoke like death wearing a suit.
Black coat. Blood on his collar. Gun in one hand, knife in the other.
His eyes found Rachel.
Everything else disappeared.
For one second just one his control slipped.
Selene saw it.
"Untie her," Raziel ordered coldly, never taking his eyes off Selene.
Selene smiled slowly.
"You always were predictable where she's concerned."
She snapped her fingers.
The room exploded into violence.
More guards poured in from hidden exits. Raziel moved first fast, lethal, surgical.
He didn't waste bullets. He didn't miss.
Rachel watched him fight like a man possessed.
Every move screamed mine.
Mikhail stormed in with backup. Ethan took the left flank. Kai covered the rear.
But Selene didn't run.
She stepped forward.
"Untie her," she said to one of her men.
The knife at Rachel's throat appeared before Raziel could stop it.
The room froze.
"One step closer," Selene said softly, "and she dies."
Raziel raised his hands slowly.
His voice dropped dangerously calm.
"You touch her, and I erase you from existence."
Selene leaned close to Rachel's ear.
"See? He'd burn the world for you."
Rachel felt the blade press slightly harder but she didn't flinch.
"Do it," Rachel said quietly.
Both Selene and Raziel froze.
Rachel lifted her chin.
"Do it. Because the second you cut me, you lose everything."
Selene narrowed her eyes.
"You think you matter that much?"
Rachel turned her head just enough to look at her.
"I know I do."
Selene studied her really studied her for the first time.
Not the heiress.
Not the pawn.
The woman.
Something dark flickered in Selene's eyes.
Then she pushed Rachel away.
"Kill them," Selene snapped.
Raziel moved.
The knife flew from his hand, embedding itself in Selene's shoulder.
She screamed once.
Gunfire exploded again. Selene staggered back, blood staining her black outfit.
Rachel fell from the chair as the ropes snappedbMikhail had cut them.
Raziel was at Rachel's side instantly, pulling her into his chest.
"You're hurt," he said sharply, scanning her.
"I'm fine," she said, gripping his coat. "Don't let her escape."
Too late.
Selene threw a smoke grenade at her feet and vanished through a hidden passage.
When the smoke cleared, she was gone.
Silence fell broken only by distant sirens.
Raziel held Rachel tighter than necessary.
She felt his heartbeat fast, furious.
"You disobeyed orders," he said quietly.
She looked up at him.
"You came anyway."
His jaw tightened.
"I told you I'd protect you."
"And I told you I won't be weak," she replied.
For a long moment, they stared at each other anger, relief, fear, desire tangled between them.
Then Raziel pulled her back against him.
Hard.
"You scare me," he said into her hair.
Rachel closed her eyes.
"Good."
They returned to the mansion before dawn.
The city was still bleeding from the night's violence.
Rachel showered, scrubbing away blood and fear, but her hands wouldn't stop shaking.
A knock came.
She already knew who it was.
"Come in."
Raziel stepped inside, sleeves rolled up, knuckles bruised, jaw tight.
"You should be resting," he said.
"So should you," she replied.
Silence stretched between them.
Then she said it.
"She wanted me as bait."
Raziel's eyes darkened.
"She won't get another chance."
"She knows things," Rachel continued. "About my father. About my mother."
"I know," Raziel said.
Rachel turned sharply.
"You knew?"
"Yes."
"And you didn't think I deserved the truth?"
Raziel walked closer.
"I wanted to protect you."
Rachel laughed bitterly.
"That's not protection. That's control."
He stopped inches away.
"You don't understand what this world does to people you love."
Rachel looked up at him, eyes blazing.
"Then stop pretending you don't love me."
The words hit him harder than bullets.
"You shouldn't say that," he said.
"But it's true," she shot back. "You didn't tear apart half the city because I'm just an obligation."
Raziel's control cracked.
He grabbed her wrist not roughly, but firmlyand pulled her closer.
"This world destroys everything it touches," he said lowly. "And I won't let it destroy you."
"Then stand beside me," she said. "Not in front of me."
Their faces were inches apart.
Heat burned between them dangerous, inevitable.
Raziel cupped her face, thumb brushing her cheekbone.
"Once I cross that line," he said, "there's no turning back."
Rachel leaned in.
"I crossed it the moment I chose you."
He kissed her.
Not gentle.
Not hesitant.
It was hunger and fear and possession all tangled together.
Rachel melted into him, fingers clutching his shirt, feeling the weight of everything unspoken.
When they broke apart, both were breathing hard.
"This changes everything," Raziel said.
"It already has," she replied.
A knock interrupted them.
Ethan entered, face grim.
"Selene's alive. And she's mobilizing."
Rachel straightened instantly.
"How long?" she asked.
"Days. Maybe less."
Raziel's expression turned lethal.
"Good," he said. "I'm done reacting."
Rachel stepped beside him not behind.
"What's the plan?"
Raziel looked at her, then nodded once.
"We go to war."
Rachel smiled slow, dangerous, unafraid.
"Then let's finish it."
