Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 – Taken by the Shadow Queen

Rachel did not sleep after Selene's call.

The words echoed in her mind like a curse.

"Training with Raziel won't save you. And soon… I will come for what belongs to me."

Belongs to her.

What did Selene mean?

Rachel stared at the ceiling, her heart pounding. The penthouse was silent, but she felt watched. Like the shadows were alive, waiting.

She slipped out of bed and walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows. The city lights below were beautiful, but they felt far away from her new reality. She was no longer just a girl in a small apartment dreaming of a better life.

She was a mafia heiress.

And someone powerful wanted her.

Morning Confrontation

By morning, Rachel found Raziel in his private office. He stood behind his desk, reading reports, his presence calm and dangerous as always.

He didn't look up when she entered.

"You're awake early," he said.

"I didn't sleep," she replied.

That made him lift his gaze.

"Selene called me."

Raziel's expression darkened instantly.

"What did she say?" he asked, his tone clipped.

"She said training with you won't save me," Rachel said, walking closer. "She said she's coming for what belongs to her."

Raziel's jaw tightened.

"She's trying to scare you."

"It worked," Rachel admitted. "But I want the truth."

He stared at her in silence for a moment.

"What exactly is Selene to you?" she asked. "You never talk about her. The men respect her. Fear her. And she knows too much about me."

Raziel walked around the desk and stopped in front of her.

"Selene was your father's right hand," he said quietly.

Rachel froze.

"She helped him build his empire. She was his strategist, his enforcer, his shadow."

"So why does she sound like my enemy?" Rachel asked.

Raziel's eyes hardened. "Because she believes the Ardent Bloodline belongs to her to control."

Rachel's chest tightened. "And you?"

"I believe you should have a choice."

Her breath caught.

The Past She Never Knew

Raziel walked to the window, his hands clasped behind his back.

"Your father didn't trust many people," he said. "But he trusted Selene. Too much."

Rachel listened silently.

"When he disappeared, Selene tried to take control of everything. But your mother erased you from the system and vanished. That ruined Selene's plans."

"So she hates me because I'm alive?"

"She sees you as a missing piece of power," Raziel replied. "If she controls you, she controls the Ardent legacy."

Rachel's hands shook. "So I'm just a weapon to all of you?"

Raziel turned back to her.

"Not to me."

She searched his face. "Why?"

He hesitated.

"Because I owe your father. And because your mother saved my life once."

Rachel's eyes widened. "My mother saved you?"

"Yes," he said simply. "That is why I will not let Selene touch you."

Her heart raced.

Danger Comes Early

That afternoon, Rachel was back in the training room. Her body still ached, but her mind was sharper.

Mikhail and Ethan sparred with her, pushing her limits. She fell, got up, fell again.

"You're improving," Ethan said.

"Barely," she replied, wiping sweat from her brow.

Suddenly, the alarms blared.

Red lights flashed.

"Security breach!" Leonardo's voice echoed through the intercom.

Raziel entered the room instantly, his expression lethal.

"Rachel, stay behind me."

Gunshots echoed from the lower floors.

Her heart stopped.

"They're here?" she whispered.

"Selene doesn't waste time," Raziel said.

The bodyguards surrounded her, forming a tight circle.

"We move to the panic room," Mikhail ordered.

They rushed through the hallways. Footsteps, shouting, gunfire. The mansion that once felt like a fortress now felt like a battlefield.

A masked man appeared at the corner and fired.

Raziel shot first.

The man dropped.

Rachel's hands trembled, but she didn't scream.

She remembered his words.

If you stay by my side, you must become dangerous.

Selene's Message

They reached the panic room. Thick steel doors sealed behind them.

Rachel's heart was racing.

"She found me already," she whispered.

Raziel looked at his phone.

A message popped up on the security screen.

SELENE

You're hiding what is mine. This is just the beginning, Raziel.

Rachel felt cold.

"She's not bluffing, is she?"

"No," Raziel said quietly. "She never does."

He looked at Rachel with a dark intensity.

"Welcome to your war, Rachel Moretti."

Her stomach twisted, but her eyes burned with something new.

Fear had shaped her life.

Now, power would.

Later that night, after the attack was repelled, Rachel sat alone in her room. Her hands still shook, but she felt different.

She had seen death up close.

She had seen Raziel kill without hesitation.

And she had seen how far Selene was willing to go.

Her phone buzzed again.

Another unknown number.

She answered slowly.

"Hello, Rachel," Selene's voice purred. "That was just a greeting. Next time, I'll come for you personally."

The line went dead.

Rachel stared at the phone.

Then she whispered to herself:

"Let her come.

Rachel stood by the window long after Selene's call ended.

Her heart was still racing, but she refused to feel weak.

She wasn't the girl who used to cry over bills and heartbreaks anymore.

She was Rachel Moretti.

The Mafia Heiress.

And she was done being afraid.

A False Sense of Peace

The next few days passed in tense silence.

Raziel increased security. More guards patrolled the mansion. Cameras were upgraded. Every visitor was checked twice.

But Selene didn't strike again.

That scared Rachel more than gunshots.

Silence in the mafia world was never peace.

It was planning.

One evening, Rachel insisted on going out.

"I can't live like a prisoner," she told Raziel.

"You're not a prisoner," he said.

"Yes, I am. In a golden cage."

He studied her for a moment, then sighed.

"You get one hour. Five guards. No arguments."

She nodded.

She needed air. She needed to feel human again.

The Trap

They went to a quiet high-end café in the city. Private, secure, discreet.

Rachel sat outside, sipping tea, pretending she was just a normal girl.

Mikhail stood nearby. Ethan and Kai scanned the area. The driver waited.

Everything felt controlled.

Too controlled.

Then Rachel felt it.

A chill.

She looked up and met a pair of cold, piercing eyes across the street.

A woman stood there.

Tall. Elegant. Dressed in black. Long silver hair tied in a low ponytail.

Her presence was calm, terrifying, powerful.

She smiled.

Rachel's stomach dropped.

Selene.

Before she could warn anyone, chaos erupted.

Smoke bombs exploded. People screamed. Gunshots echoed.

"MOVE!" Mikhail shouted.

But it was too late.

A man grabbed Rachel from behind. She tried to fight, remembered her training, elbowed him but another hand covered her mouth.

A needle pierced her neck.

Her vision blurred.

The last thing she saw was Selene walking toward her calmly, stepping over fallen guards like a queen walking through her palace.

Then everything went dark.

Selene's Lair

Rachel woke up tied to a chair.

Her head throbbed. Her vision was blurry.

She looked around.

A large underground room. Cold concrete walls. A single light bulb above her.

Footsteps echoed.

Selene walked in.

She looked even more beautiful up close. Calm. Dangerous. Untouchable.

"So," Selene said softly, "the heiress finally meets the shadow."

Rachel's heart pounded. "You kidnapped me."

"Yes," Selene replied simply. "I told you I would come for what belongs to me."

Rachel lifted her chin. "I don't belong to you."

Selene smiled slightly. "Your father disagreed."

The Truth That Burns

Selene walked around her slowly, like a predator.

"Your father was a genius," she said. "He built an empire from nothing. I helped him. I planned his moves. I eliminated his enemies."

Rachel swallowed. "Then why are you against me?"

"Because you are his legacy," Selene replied. "And I was supposed to inherit everything."

Rachel's eyes widened. "You wanted to replace him?"

"I wanted to rule beside him," Selene corrected. "But he chose your mother. He chose a nobody over me."

Her eyes hardened.

"And when he disappeared, your mother erased you from the system and destroyed my plans. She stole everything from me."

Rachel's heart twisted. "So this is about revenge."

Selene leaned down, lifting Rachel's chin.

"This is about power," she whispered. "And you are power in human form."

Raziel Strikes Back

Meanwhile, the city was on lockdown.

Raziel stood in his command room, his expression darker than anyone had ever seen.

"She took her," Ethan said.

"I know," Raziel replied calmly.

But his calm was terrifying.

"Find her location," he ordered.

Leonardo typed furiously. "We traced the signal from the tranquilizer compound. Old industrial district. Underground facility."

Raziel picked up his gun.

"Prepare the men. Tonight, Selene learns what happens when she touches what is mine."

Rachel's Defiance

Back in Selene's lair, Rachel stared at her captor.

"You won't win," she said quietly.

Selene chuckled. "You sound like your father."

Rachel's eyes burned. "Raziel is coming."

"I know," Selene replied. "That's why I took you."

Rachel frowned.

Selene smiled slowly.

"You're the bait."

Cliffhanger Ending

Rachel heard distant explosions.

Gunfire.

Shouting.

Selene looked toward the door calmly.

"He's here."

Rachel's heart raced.

The war had officially begun.
