Chapter 22 - Two Too Late

Hah!!

He exhaled and swung his axe on the first woman accursed.

She was lying on the ground, immobile.

'This is in such bad taste,' He critisized his own actions, but it was something he had to do.

It was either them or him.

And since they were already dead, this was a necessary evil he had to commit.

The sharp axe, paired with his monstrous strength, glided through her neck like a hot knife through a stick of butter.

He also came across a medium-level accursed, and it had a chitin formation over its body.

Which meant they would be harder to cut through.

But he promptly ignored them and moved on.

Grr!

Heugh!

Grragh!

The second he hacked the first one's neck, every single low-level accursed's eyes glowed an eerie blue, and they grunted simultaneously.

The aura around them thickened, dizzying him for a second.

Now, it was a race against time.

He had to kill 19 more in mere minutes, before this radiated energy converted him into an accursed himself.

Slice!

Slice!

He quickly sliced through the remaining two accursed there before they even had a chance to get up.

Wasting no time, he quickly dashed outside at his full speed and reached the other two accursed who had gotten up halfway.

Slice! Slice!

The blood spilt on his face was unnaturally thick and clotty.

Yuck!

And now, the real challenge started.

They had already gotten up, and by the time he killed a few more, they would group up together.

Krrrk!

He ran upto another accursed, in the farm right next to this, and sliced his head off.

'It stinks so bad!' He complained.

He was in a constant state of throwing up, but he held back as much as he could.

The next one he went to, lunged at him, but he dodged it effortlessly and hacked his axe into the brain.

Being bitten would only speed up the corruption process.

'They are kind of like mindless zombies from the movies,' He commented on the uncanny similarity.

"But aren't they supposed to be super slow and stupid?" He yelled, looking at a horrifying creature running upto him.

It looked eager to bite, like an office worker was eager to lick his boss's shoes.

Oof!

It hit way too close to home.

As he was preparing to cut this one down, he noticed that the others had started to form groups.

This wasn't a good sign.

They were smarter than he gave them credit for.

While one of them distracted him, the others grouped up together.

Slice!

12 more to go.

After killing this one, he looked around for the easiest target.

But looked like he was a tad bit late.

The smallest group they had was a group of 3.

And the number was as high as 15, with some children mixed in the groups too.

This was going to be hard.

He dashed towards the group of 3, who dashed towards him too, the second they noticed him.

All with a single motive.

To bite him, not caring for their own lives.

'Well, there isn't much life here to save in the first place.'

He thought, as he pulled a single one out of the group with his axe being used as a hook, and dashed aside.

Splurch!

The blood splashed again, and he ducked down to dodge the accursed who was pouncing on him, mouth open, ready to take a chunk out of his flesh.

Pew!

He resorted to killing one of them with his stored spell.

A crystal lance.

It made a gaping hole through its head, the brain oozing out of the open skull.

And the last of the group, he handled with utter care.

A single slash!

9 more to go.

But he was slowly feeling the radiation catching up to him now.

His thought process was slowing down, and he was feeling lethargic.

This speed wasn't enough.

The remaining accurseds had also grouped up, with dozens in a single group now.

And they were all running towards him at an inhumane speed.

Sure, it wasn't comparable to his, but he was pretty much surrounded by multiple directions.

He had to get out before they completely surrounded him.

He ran towards one of the few openings he could see, with dozens of accurseds chasing him.

The accumulated radiation from them was devastating, and he had to maintain his distance.

Pew! Pew!

He launched a few more lances, with a kill rate of 80 percent.

Of course, from this distance, some of his lances missed.

Which was not good.

Because given his current limit of storing spells, he would run out before he reached his quota.

Pew! Pew!

And finally, he ran out of all his offensive spells.

18 kills in total.

2 more to go.

And he couldn't even approach the group chasing him, since it was so densely packed now.

His head was spinning as he ran away from them.

Boom!

Suddenly, he heard a blast from the middle of the village, with red mist spraying over 20 feet in the air.

'That must be Eve,' He thought, but quickly shook his head to remove these thoughts.

He wasn't in a position to think about her.

'Can these creatures climb trees?' He wondered, seeing a massive tree in the distance.

He quickly changed his direction and ran towards the tree.

As he reached it, he tried climbing it.

"Fuck!" He cursed under his breath, "I am the one who can't climb the tree."

What a fucking dumbass.

Being a boy growing up in a slum surrounded by a concrete jungle, he rarely ever saw any vegetation.

And the ones he came across were not accessible to him.

Looking back, he saw there was some distance between them, given the speed difference.

So, he decided to make a last-ditch attempt.

He tried casting a spell from scratch.

Something he wasn't very experienced in.

It took him 3 seconds to form one, and they were already way too close to him.

Pew!

It was a hit.

Just one more to go!

He immediately cast four of the saved-up defensive spells, forming a crystal box around him with four 3-meter-high walls with a slit for him to swing his axe.

Heurr!

Grr!

The accurseds weren't powerful enough to rip through that, and he easily killed the last one.

His mission was complete.

The radiation was quickly thickening up around him.

But there wasn't any response from the silver woman.

Did he mess up the counting?

Thinking this, he killed another two, holding up his breath.

Still no response.

'Fuck!'

He had to escape now.

He jumped with all his might, holding up the top of the crystal wall.

And as he was about to jump on the tree to hopefully use some of his utility spells to escape, a familiar sound rang in his ears.

"What are you doing here?"

'This voice…'

It was Eve.
