The forest stretched endlessly under the pale morning light. Mist clung to tree trunks and curled around roots like restless spirits. Class 1-C stirred from the remnants of last night's campfire, its ashes cold, the forest eerily quiet.
Hiko Shinoegami flexed his fingers, the cursed flame in his hands flickering faintly, responding to his rising anticipation. The devil in his mind stirred. Today will test you.
"Morning, Hiko," Hinata Kiyomi said softly, holding a steaming bowl of porridge with dried fruit. "Ten kilometers today. We'll need energy."
Hiko nodded and ate, the warmth a comfort. The devil's voice hissed: Peace is fleeting.
The rest of the class stirred as well. Rex Calder's explosions crackled faintly in the morning air, Lio Fenris tested the wind with a slice of his blade, and Dain Kroft's shadow twisted unnaturally, alert to danger. Even Bran Holt quietly stretched his muscles, readying himself.
By 7:00 AM, Class 1-C was on the move. The forest floor was damp, soft underfoot. Mist and sunlight made the path seem almost otherworldly.
"This part feels… wrong," Mira Lune murmured, eyes scanning. "Something powerful is nearby."
"Rank 1," Dain Kroft said calmly, his shadow extending slightly. "Iron. Coming toward us."
Hiko's cursed flame flared instinctively. Hinata stepped close, calm. "We can handle it. Together."
The ground trembled beneath the approaching threat. Leaves shook, and the forest seemed to hold its breath. A massive figure emerged—an Iron Golem, Rank 1. Its jagged metallic body reflected the morning light, glowing molten seams and blazing red eyes locking onto the students.
"Formation!" Toma Grell shouted.
The class reacted instantly. Rina Solis summoned fire to strike weak points, Selene Mora spread ice to slow its steps, and Yuna Kirei stayed ready to heal anyone caught. Lio Fenris leaped into the air, wind slicing at the golem's limbs. Rex Calder launched explosions at its joints.
Hiko's cursed flame formed jagged spears that slammed into the golem's leg. Sparks flew, but the creature barely flinched.
Hinata's light magic struck molten seams, while Selene froze the ground beneath its feet. The golem swung a massive arm, crushing a tree where Hiko had stood. Its molten heat cracked the ice around Selene, and its relentless power pushed the class back, forcing them to work in unison.
Rex's explosions dented its armor, Lio's wind blades shredded joints, Dain's shadows bound its legs, and Bran Holt dodged its crushing strikes. But the golem was relentless.
Then Daizen moved. Silent until now, he planted his feet firmly. The ground trembled beneath him. He raised his hands, earth magic flowing: rocks, soil, and roots lifted, circling around him like a storm of stone.
"Stay back! I've got this!" Daizen shouted.
The class gaped. Daizen, always calm and quiet, was about to face a Rank 1 golem solo. Hiko's cursed flame flickered curiously; Hinata's eyes widened.
Daizen slammed his fists into the ground. Pillars of earth erupted, lifting the golem, forcing it off balance. The molten seams hissed, and sparks flew. The golem thrashed violently, smashing pillars and hurling debris, but Daizen's control never wavered. He twisted rock and soil into barriers, spikes, and cages simultaneously, keeping the Iron Golem restrained.
"Keep it contained!" he barked. The class joined in: Lio sliced at its arms with wind, Rina scorched weak points, Selene froze the ground, Hiko and Hinata attacked molten seams.
The battle raged like an elemental storm. Sparks flew, rocks shattered, ice cracked, and flames hissed. But Daizen's earth magic held the balance. With a final, earth-shattering strike, Daizen slammed the Iron Golem into the forest floor. Stone encased the molten iron, crushing its joints and cracking the seams. With a deafening roar, the Rank 1 creature collapsed, steaming, its red eyes dimming.
Silence fell. Class 1-C stared, breathing heavily.
"H… how…" Mira Lune whispered.
"By himself…" Rina Solis murmured.
Daizen dropped to his knees, exhausted. "It's not impossible… if you control the battlefield."
The class slowly gathered around, offering water and support. Their eyes shone with surprise and newfound respect. Quiet strength could indeed shatter iron.
After a short rest, they resumed the march. The forest seemed calmer, almost reverent, after the battle.
As night fell, Class 1-C set up camp. The fire crackled, sending shadows across their faces. Dinner was simple, warmed rations, and foraged vegetables. Laughter was rare but genuine.
"Day three survived," Hinata said softly. "We're getting stronger… together."
Hiko nodded, tasting the warmth of both food and camaraderie. The devil hissed, dissatisfied. Enjoy it while you can. Stronger challenges await.
Night embraced the forest. The students drifted to sleep, exhausted but alive. Hiko sat slightly apart, cursed flame flickering softly in his hands.
Tomorrow would bring ten more kilometers—and likely a new trial. But today, Class 1-C had proven that even the quietest among them could defy expectations.
