Chapter 31 - The Lake Of Terror

The morning sun barely pierced the dense mist that clung to the surface of the Lake of Terror, one of the infamous Five Deadly Lakes. Its waters stretched endlessly in every direction, black and foreboding, reflecting the jagged cliffs and twisted trees along its edges. Even at first glance, the lake radiated danger. A chill ran through the members of Class 1-C as they approached its shores.

Hiko Shinoegami stepped carefully onto the damp soil at the water's edge. The cursed flame in his hands flickered in response to the lake's aura. The devil inside his mind stirred, whispering, This is the real test. Not monsters you can handle with a trick or two—this will decide if you're ready.

Hinata Kiyomi, standing beside him, shivered slightly as her eyes scanned the dark, rippling water. "I've heard stories… travelers who enter this lake don't always return. Beasts lurk beneath, and the fish… they're enormous," she said. Her voice, calm as ever, was layered with tension.

Rex Calder swallowed audibly. "Perfect. So not only do we have monsters under the water, but massive fish too. Fantastic."

Lio Fenris' fingers twitched along the handle of his wind blade. "We need full concentration. Even a single Rank 1 creature in these waters could wipe us out."

From behind the group, Rougen appeared as if materializing from the mist itself. His calm gaze swept over the lake. "Yes, the lake is dangerous. The beasts here are immensely strong. Even the fish are tough," he said. "But I've always maintained the fish are worth it. Delicious. I've brought rods for everyone, and I even acquired a boat large enough for all of us. We'll cross this lake safely… as long as none of you panic."

The boat, sturdy and massive, waited at the shore. Hiko climbed aboard carefully, the cursed flame coiling faintly around his wrists. Hinata followed, then the rest of Class 1-C. Daizen and Bran Holt secured supplies, while Toma Grell positioned barriers and shields along the edges. Gold Prasso stood at the prow, his golden aura flickering faintly, a calm pillar amidst the students' growing unease.

As they pushed off from the shore, mist hugged the surface of the water, obscuring what lay beneath. Every creak of the wood and splash of oars echoed unnervingly across the lake. The students rowed cautiously, eyes scanning every ripple, every shadow.

For hours, the boat slowly moved through the lake. Rougen encouraged them to fish as they traveled. "Even in dangerous waters, one can eat well," he said, casually handing rods to the students. "Catch something, and you'll see why this lake is legendary."

Nervous but obedient, the students lowered lines into the water. Rex pulled up a wriggling silver fish, flopping wildly. Lio caught a thicker, shimmering specimen. Selene Mora froze the water around one enormous fish to prevent it from diving away. Hiko concentrated his cursed flame, warming the bait slightly to make it irresistible.

The mood lightened slightly as small meals were prepared directly on the boat. Rina Solis' fire and Selene Mora's ice combined to create an impromptu cooking station. Even Mira Lune, usually quiet, smiled faintly as she savored a freshly caught fish. "It's… incredible," she murmured.

But the lake was not done with them.

The water around the boat erupted violently. Mist thickened unnaturally, curling around the vessel. A massive shadow surged upward, coiling and thrashing. The students froze as the Kraken emerged. Its tentacles twisted like giant serpents, each thicker than a tree trunk, eyes glowing faintly red. The lake itself seemed to quake under its presence.

"Everyone, stay calm!" Rougen shouted, his voice cutting through the panic. "You'll need to coordinate. Master Rank control is here to ensure none of you die, but the fight is yours."

Gold Prasso stepped forward, golden aura flaring. "Class 1-C, show me what you've learned. Work together. But remember, this isn't a sparring match. Focus or perish."

Fear swept through the students. Even Hiko felt it, a knot of tension in his chest. Their combined strength could only reach Semi Rank 0, far below the Kraken's formidable power.

Tentacles smashed the boat, splintering part of the deck. Toma Grell conjured a barrier just in time to protect some students. Hiko's cursed flame surged as he lunged toward a tentacle, stabbing with fiery spears. Rina Solis and Lio Fenris attacked in unison, fire and wind clashing against the Kraken's massive limbs.

The battle dragged on. Every strike from Class 1-C barely slowed the Kraken. Waves crashed over the boat, water soaked students, and exhaustion quickly set in. Rex's explosions dented tentacles, but the creature adapted quickly. Selene Mora froze sections of the lake, only to have them shattered. Bran Holt dodged with superhuman speed, but even he was forced to retreat repeatedly.

Hinata stayed close to Hiko, guiding his attacks. "The core!" she shouted. "If we can hit the base of the tentacles, we might have a chance!"

Hiko's cursed flame flared in response. His hands ignited with jagged, black-and-red flames, hotter and sharper than ever before. He focused, drawing power from both his Devil's Mark and the growing intensity of the battle. The cursed flame was not just fire—it was a counterforce, able to break through defenses that ordinary magic could not.

He dove forward, striking a tentacle with a jagged spear of cursed flame. Flesh sizzled under the heat, and the Kraken howled in fury. He leapt between tentacles, each strike more precise, more violent. The cursed flame ate through scales and muscle, and slowly, painfully, he pushed the Kraken toward the edge of the boat's defensive positions.

The other students coordinated as best they could, distracted by the creature's thrashing. Lio cut segments with wind, Rina scorched its limbs, Selene froze areas of water to limit its movement, Dain ensnared tentacles with shadows, and Rex blasted openings with controlled explosions.

Hours of relentless struggle passed. Exhaustion was overwhelming, but Hiko's cursed flame roared brighter with each strike, burning hotter, sharper, feeding off his resolve and the fear that his friends could die if he failed.

Finally, he saw the opening: the Kraken's core beneath the tentacles, exposed and vulnerable. Hiko drew in a deep breath, igniting every ounce of his cursed flame. The air around his hands shimmered, heat and power crackling. With a single, terrifying motion, he plunged his cursed flame directly into the core.

The Kraken screamed—a horrifying, reverberating sound that shook the lake. Tentacles flailed wildly, but the cursed flame did not falter. It consumed the core, black and red fire tearing through muscle, sinew, and scale.

With a final, massive roar, the Kraken collapsed, the lake calming as it sank beneath the surface. Class 1-C leaned on each other, panting and soaked, hearts racing. They had done it. Hiko had defeated the Kraken with his cursed flame.

Gold Prasso's golden aura flickered approvingly. "Well done, Hiko. And well done, everyone else. You survived a Rank 0+ threat that could have ended you all. Remember this feeling. Respect the lake, respect your limits, and respect each other."

Rougen, ever casual, stretched and yawned. "Immensely strong beasts, and yet, delicious. The Kraken will feed us tonight," he said, holding up several rods with a grin. "The fish here are extraordinary. And tonight… you'll learn why."

Even in exhaustion, Class 1-C watched as the Kraken was prepared for the fire. Flames from Rina Solis roasted the beast, Selene Mora stabilized the cooking, and Hiko watched, awe and satisfaction mingling in his chest. The smell was intoxicating—rich, smoky, and mouthwatering.

When the first bites were served, the students chewed in stunned silence. The meat was tender, flavorful, and unlike anything they had ever eaten. Hinata's eyes sparkled. "It's… incredible."

Rex swallowed a mouthful, nearly choking in amazement. "The best seafood I've ever tasted!"

Mira Lune nodded, tears of relief and joy in her eyes. "I've never had anything like this."

Hiko took a bite, savoring the taste, and felt a flicker of pride. The cursed flame still pulsed faintly in his hands, a reminder of the power it had given him today.

As the boat continued its journey, the lake calm once more, the students rested. Ten kilometers crossed, twenty more to go. The stars reflected on the water's surface, a reminder that even in darkness, survival—and triumph—was possible.

Hiko leaned against Hinata, tired but smiling. The devil in his mind hissed quietly. Not bad… this one knows how to fight.

Tomorrow, they would continue across the lake. But for now, they had faced terror, survived, and tasted victory—both in power and in the delicious reward of their ordeal.
