Chapter 18 - Chapter 13: Echoes Beneath the Planks

A sudden crack split the air, sharp enough to make TSUF's teeth chatter. A section of the dock shuddered beneath a heavy stack of crates, sending a tremor up his legs. He froze—not from fear, but from calculation, each second stretching impossibly long.

Shadows stretched differently now, not just dark corners, but shapes that hinted at motion. He felt their weight pressing in, not literally, but like a warning threaded into the timbre of the day.

A boy nearby stumbled backward, eyes wide. TSUF didn't speak. He lunged, adjusting his own footing, grabbing what he could to redirect the tumbling stack. Muscle and mind worked in unison. One wrong move, and the consequences would not be small.

The crates landed with a resounding crash, splintering wood, rattling nails. TSUF exhaled slowly, muscles trembling, chest tight. No praise came, no one noticed, but that didn't matter. Awareness, precision, and timing had saved more than just cargo—they had saved the boy.

He stepped back, eyes scanning the warped planks, listening to the echoes of wood and metal, feeling the pulse of the dock itself. Night was approaching, but the danger didn't end with the sun. Every decision now carried weight, and every shadow was a reminder: even small choices mattered.

TSUF squared his shoulders, muscles still quivering, mind alert. The day's lessons had been harsh, but the consequences had been real. And for once, survival and judgment had walked hand in hand.
