Chapter 38 - CHAPTER 38 — WHEN LAW FAILS, HEAVEN SENDS A PERSON

Heaven doesn't like embarrassment.

But it hates precedent.

The Enforcer didn't return.

That alone told me enough.

When Heaven stops retrieving its pieces, it means it's changing the game.

The sky cleared unnaturally.

Too blue.

Too clean.

No clouds dared form.

Xueyi stood beside me, eyes narrowed.

"This feels worse than a decree."

"It is," I replied.

"Law failed."

A path appeared in the air.

Not light.

Not Qi.

A road—as if reality itself had been instructed to step aside.

Footsteps echoed.

Unhurried.

Measured.

A man descended.

No pressure.

No aura.

Yet every cultivator in Iron Lake City instinctively lowered their head.

Not forced.

Conditioned.

He wore white-and-gold robes.

Not sect attire.

Executor's vestment.

He stopped three paces away from me.

Smiled politely.

"Li Shen," he said.

"My name is irrelevant, but my position is not."

Xueyi felt it.

Her breath hitched.

"An Ascended Executor…"

I studied him.

Carefully.

No system prompt appeared.

That was new.

"Let me guess," I said.

"Negotiation?"

He chuckled.

"Correction."

He raised one finger.

The world stilled.

Not frozen.

Paused by agreement.

"I am authorized to offer you three paths," he said calmly.

"One: Accept Heavenly Alignment. Your deviations will be… streamlined."

"Two: Voluntary exile beyond regulated realms."

"Three—"

He looked at my sword.

"—I end you here."

I smiled.

"You came personally for that?"

"Yes," he said honestly.

"Because variables like you don't respond to abstractions."

I stepped forward.

The paused world creaked.

"Here's my counteroffer," I said.

"I keep walking."

The Executor's smile faded.

Just a little.

"You misunderstand," he said softly.

"This is mercy."

I raised my blade.

Not attacking.

Demonstrating.

One movement.

The simplest correction I'd ever made.

The Executor's sleeve split.

Just cloth.

But his eyes widened.

For the first time—

He felt it.

"…You touched alignment," he whispered.

I nodded.

"Poorly designed."

He laughed.

Genuinely.

"Heaven was right," he said.

"You're dangerous."

He stepped back.

The world resumed.

Sound, color, chaos returned.

"This isn't over," he said.

"No," I agreed.

"It's finally started."

He vanished.

No trace.

No pursuit.

Xueyi exhaled shakily.

"That wasn't a victory."

"No," I said softly.

"It was acknowledgment."

Far above, Heaven updated its final category.

Not public.

Not official.

Uncorrectable Variable.
