Chapter 40 - CHAPTER 40 — THE FIRST DISCIPLE

He didn't bow.

That's why I noticed him.

Everyone else knelt.

Some out of fear.

Some out of hope.

Some because kneeling was all they knew.

The boy stood.

Barefoot.

Clothes patched more times than stitched.

A sword strapped to his back that had been broken—and badly repaired.

He met my eyes.

Not challenging.

Not worshipping.

Asking.

"What do you want?" I asked.

"To stop being wrong," he said simply.

Xueyi inhaled sharply.

I smiled.

"Show me your sword," I said.

He drew it.

Crooked.

Unbalanced.

The grip wrapped backward.

Every sect would have laughed him out.

I took the blade.

Held it.

Felt his habits.

His mistakes.

His effort.

I handed it back.

"Swing."

He did.

Ugly.

Honest.

I stepped behind him.

Didn't touch him.

Just stood close enough.

"Don't imitate," I said.

"Listen."

He swung again.

Different.

Not better.

Truer.

The air shifted.

The Pavilion hummed.

Xueyi's eyes widened.

"He resonated…"

I nodded.

"He stopped obeying."

I looked at the boy.

"Name?"

"Chen Yu."

"Chen Yu," I said, "do you accept correction over comfort?"

He swallowed.

Then nodded.

"Yes."

"Then you're in," I said.

No ceremony.

No oath.

The system reacted.

Heaven noticed.

Again.

Far above, the ledger added a second name.

That worried them more than my own.
