Cherreads

Chapter 20 - The Glacial Tomb

Jian Chen stood up.

His white robes were stained with dust. His hair, usually perfect, hung in messy strands across his forehead.

The silence in the arena was heavy. The spectators didn't dare cheer. They were witnessing the impossible: a mortal brute pushing back a cultivation genius.

Jian Chen touched his lip.

He pulled his hand away. Red.

Blood.

He stared at the crimson smear on his fingertip.

"You made me bleed," Jian Chen whispered.

He didn't scream. He didn't rage. Instead, his eyes went completely dead. The temperature in the arena plummeted another twenty degrees. Frost began to creep up the stone pillars of the stands.

"I was playing with you," Jian Chen said, his voice hollow. "I thought of you as a clown. I see now... you are a pest."

He stabbed his crystal sword into the ground.

"**Frost Sect Secret Art: Frozen Heart.**"

*THUMP-THUMP.*

The sound of a heartbeat echoed, loud enough for the front row to hear.

Jian Chen's skin turned translucent blue. His veins glowed white. The air around him shimmered, freezing moisture into tiny floating needles.

**Qi Condensation Stage 5 (Peak).**

He pulled the sword out. It wasn't crystal anymore. It was pure, condensed white light.

"Die."

He vanished.

He was fast. Much faster than before.

Kaelen raised his Slab.

*CLANG.*

The impact sparked. Kaelen slid back five feet, his boots carving grooves in the stone.

*CLANG. CLANG. CLANG.*

Jian Chen was a blur of white light. He struck from the left, the right, above, behind.

Kaelen blocked. He parried.

But for every block, a cut landed.

*Slash.* A shallow cut on Kaelen's cheek.

*Slash.* A deep gash on his forearm.

*Stab.* The tip of the ice sword pierced his shoulder.

The **Iron Skin**—immune to mortal steel—was being cut by the enhanced Qi blade.

"Too slow!" Jian Chen shouted, appearing behind Kaelen.

He thrust the sword toward Kaelen's spine.

Kaelen didn't turn. He stomped on the ground.

**Gravity Well.**

The earth lurched. Jian Chen's balance wavered for a microsecond.

It was enough.

Kaelen swung the slab backward, blindly.

*WHAM.*

The flat of the blade caught Jian Chen in the ribs.

*CRACK.*

Jian Chen grunted, sliding away. He clutched his side. His "Frozen Heart" armor had cracked, but it held.

He glared at Kaelen.

Kaelen stood there, bleeding from a dozen wounds. The cuts were freezing over, preventing the blood from flowing.

"Is that it?" Kaelen asked. He cracked his neck. "I thought you were going to kill me, not give me acupuncture."

Jian Chen's face twisted.

"You want death?" Jian Chen floated up.

He rose ten feet into the air. He held his sword high.

The clouds above the arena began to swirl. A vortex of ice Qi gathered. It was massive. The pressure made the weaker spectators faint.

"**Forbidden Art: Glacial Tomb!**"

A massive block of ice, the size of a house, began to form above Kaelen. It wasn't just heavy; it was infused with Absolute Zero Qi.

Elara stood up in the box, screaming. "Jian! Stop! You'll destroy the arena! You'll kill everyone!"

Jian didn't listen. His ego demanded total erasure.

"BE BURIED!"

He brought the sword down.

The massive iceberg fell.

It cast a shadow over the entire ring. It was inescapable.

Kaelen looked up at the falling mountain of ice.

He didn't look afraid.

He looked... hungry.

"Finally," Kaelen whispered. "Enough pressure."

He didn't dodge. He planted his feet.

He gripped the **Nameless Slab** with white-knuckled intensity.

He didn't strike the ice.

He struck the ground.

"**Heaven-Devouring Art: Earthbreaker.**"

*BOOM.*

He slammed the slab into the arena floor with every ounce of his Stage 8 strength.

He wasn't trying to hit Jian Chen. He was aiming deeper.

At the fault line.

*CRACK.*

The arena floor split. A fissure zigzagged across the stone, straight toward the center.

At the same moment, the Glacial Tomb crashed down.

*KA-BOOOOM.*

The impact was cataclysmic. Dust and ice shards exploded outward. The protective barriers around the stands shattered.

The crowd screamed, shielding their faces.

Silence followed.

In the center of the arena lay a mountain of shattered ice.

"He's dead," Jarek Vane whispered. "Flattened."

Jian Chen hovered in the air, panting. His Qi was exhausted. But he smiled.

"Dust to dust."

*RUMBLE.*

The smile froze on his face.

The ground was shaking.

"An aftershock?" Jian Chen frowned.

*RUMBLE. RUMBLE.*

No. This wasn't an impact tremor. This was coming from *below*.

Four pillars of blue light erupted from the corners of the city. North. South. East. West.

The **Spirit Bore Spikes** had activated.

Triggered by the massive clash of Ice and Earth Qi, the mechanism kicked into gear.

The ground beneath the arena began to glow.

The fissure Kaelen had created widened.

Bright, blinding azure light shot up from the crack.

It was pure, unadulterated energy. The breath of the planet.

**The Dragon Vein.**

"What is that?" The Patriarch shouted. "The energy readings... they are off the charts!"

Jian Chen looked down, confused. "I didn't summon this..."

From beneath the pile of shattered ice, a hand punched out.

It grabbed the edge of the fissure.

Kaelen pulled himself up.

He was battered. His robes were shredded. One eye was swollen shut.

But he was smiling.

He stood on the edge of the glowing crack, bathed in the raw power of the Dragon Vein.

"Thanks for the help, Upgrade," Kaelen called out to the hovering cultivator.

"You drilled the hole."

Kaelen opened his arms. The **Heaven-Devouring Scripture** roared to life inside him like a starving beast.

"Now," Kaelen's voice dropped to a demonic growl.

"Time to eat."
