Cherreads

Chapter 26 - Wings of the Calamity

The cocoon pulsed.

It was a jagged, ugly thing made of hardened black Qi and solidified lightning. It sat in the center of the scorched crater where the Thunder King had died.

Inside, biology was being rewritten.

Kaelen screamed.

He couldn't help it. The pain wasn't just physical; it was genetic. The **Heaven-Devouring Scripture** was taking the essence of the Thunder King—a beast born of the storm—and forcing it into a human template.

Bones broke and knitted back together a thousand times a second. His blood, previously thick and heavy like mercury, now crackled with voltage.

But the worst part was his back.

Two lumps formed on his shoulder blades. They grew rapidly, tearing through muscle and skin.

*CRACK.*

The cocoon shattered.

A shockwave of blue and black energy exploded outward, flattening the surrounding forest for a hundred meters.

Kaelen stood in the center.

He was taller. His hair had grown out, floating as if underwater, black strands streaked with electric blue. His skin was pale, etched with tribal markings that glowed with a faint, rhythmic light.

But the most terrifying change was on his back.

Two magnificent wings stretched out, spanning twenty feet.

They weren't feathered angel wings. They were demonic. The structure was black bone, sharp and jagged. Between the bones stretched a membrane of pure, condensed blue plasma.

They hummed with power. The air around them distorted from the heat.

"System," Kaelen's voice echoed. It sounded deeper. Layered. Like two people speaking at once.

"Status."

> **[Ascension Complete]**

> **Current Rank: Demon Foundation: Stage 1.**

> **Race: Human (Variant: Storm-Demon).**

> **New Trait: Flight (Supersonic).**

> **New Trait: Lightning Reflexes.**

**Foundation Establishment.**

The barrier that separated mortals from true cultivators.

Mortals looked at the mountain. Foundation experts flew over it.

Kaelen flexed his wings. The plasma membrane snapped like a whip.

"Let's test the engine."

He crouched.

*BOOM.*

He didn't jump. He launched.

The ground didn't just crack; it vanished into a crater of dust. Kaelen shot into the sky like a surface-to-air missile.

100 feet.

1,000 feet.

5,000 feet.

He punched through the cloud layer.

The sun hit his face. The air was thin and freezing, but his **Mythic Flesh** ignored the cold.

He hovered there, looking down at the world. The massive Beast Wilderness looked like a patch of moss. Silver City was a tiny grey smudge in the distance.

"I can see everything," Kaelen whispered. His vision zoomed in, tracking an eagle flying three miles away.

He looked at the **Nameless Slab** strapped to his back.

"Gravity plus Speed," Kaelen mused.

He folded his wings.

He dove.

He aimed for a mountain peak in the distance. A jagged spire of rock standing alone.

Gravity pulled him down.

His wings beat once, adding thrust.

**Speed: Mach 1.**

A sonic boom erupted behind him, shattering the clouds.

**Speed: Mach 2.**

The air friction turned the front of his body red hot. He became a meteor.

He reached the mountain peak.

He didn't use a technique. He didn't use Qi. He just swung the Slab at terminal velocity.

*KRA-KOOM.*

The impact was heard in Silver City, fifty miles away.

The top fifty feet of the mountain didn't break. It *vaporized*. Rock turned to dust instantly. The shockwave blew the snow off the neighboring peaks.

Kaelen hovered amidst the falling debris.

He looked at the flat plateau he had just created.

"Acceptable," he nodded.

Suddenly, his head snapped to the South.

His new senses picked up a disturbance. Not sound. Not sight.

Pressure.

A massive, oppressive aura was moving toward the Beast Wilderness. It felt like a glacier grinding across the earth.

**Sect Master Han.**

He was early.

"He's fast," Kaelen noted. "Flying on a flying sword?"

Kaelen checked his internal clock.

"Jarek said three days. It's been two."

The Sect Master was burning his own blood to get here faster. He wanted revenge that badly.

Kaelen looked at the Vane Safehouse map Jarek had given him. It was nearby, hidden in a valley.

"Hide?" Kaelen scoffed.

He checked his Qi reserves.

**Demon Foundation Stage 1.**

**Thunder King Core: Digested.**

He was fresh. He was evolved. He was armed.

Why hide in a hole when you own the sky?

Kaelen turned his body toward the incoming pressure.

He flared his wings. Lightning arced between the bones.

"System," Kaelen grinned, revealing teeth that were slightly sharper than before.

"Set a waypoint for the big signal."

> **[Waypoint Set: Sect Master Han.]**

> **[Distance: 40 Miles.]**

> **[ETA at Max Speed: 2 Minutes.]**

Kaelen gripped his Slab.

"Let's go say hello."

*BANG.*

He broke the sound barrier again, streaking across the sky like a black lightning bolt.

Hunting the hunter.
