Silas's POV
The memory of her reaction still burned in my throat like acid. Who looks at their rescuer like that? Like I was death incarnate standing in that hospital room.
Her eyes had gone wide with pure terror, lips quivering as if she wanted to scream but couldn't find her voice. I wasn't looking for gratitude, but something other than that bone-deep fear would have been preferable.
I shoved my hands deeper into my pockets as I walked down the corporate hallway. Running late. The whole hospital drama had derailed my schedule completely. She'd woken up, caused that scene, then vanished with the kid without so much as a backward glance, still wearing that damn hospital gown.
What bothered me most was her reaction when I said my name. The recognition in her eyes, the terror that followed. Did we have history? Some forgotten encounter? It couldn't be a one-night stand since I don't do those.
"Good afternoon, President VALERIUS'Empire."
