Bella's POV
A full week had passed since I'd opened my eyes in this sterile hospital room, and my body remained a traitor. Each movement sent tremors through my legs, each breath came shallow and labored. The weakness consumed me so completely that I spent most hours collapsed on the spare bed they'd wheeled in next to Toby's.
I understood my body wasn't ready for any exertion, but circumstances refused to wait for my recovery.
"There you are," Fiona announced, stepping through the doorway with Kaden trailing behind her. The moment my brother's gaze landed on me, his expression crumpled.
"Jesus Christ, Bella. What possessed you to sneak out of here and drag yourself around the city? Look at yourself now." He rushed to my bedside and seized my wrist, pressing his fingers against my pulse like he expected it to stop beating.
