"Congratulations, Ms. Delamonte. You're pregnant."
The doctor beamed as she delivered the news, her smile wide and practiced. If only she knew that the woman sitting across from her felt anything but joy.
Delfina stared at the doctor in silence, waiting for her to laugh, to admit that it was some kind of sick joke. But the woman only kept smiling, her expression so calm it made Delfina's skin crawl.
She didn't blame her. This was usually good news—life changing news in fact, the kind women cried over in happiness.
But it wasn't to her.
"Pregnant?" Delfina asked slowly, disbelief widening her eyes.
"That's right," the doctor replied, picking up the test results and scanning them again in case she'd missed something. "You're one month pregna—"
"That's impossible," Delfina cut in sharply. "I took the morning pill immediately after sex. There's no way I can be pregnant."
The smile finally slipped from the doctor's face when she realized this was not a celebration.
