Chapter 12 - Chapter twelve

The late afternoon sunlight streamed through the window, casting a golden glow over the scattered toys cluttering the living room floor. Violet was carefully folding laundry, her movements deliberate but distracted. Her mind raced, torn between the need to maintain order and the growing storm of uncertainty swirling around her. The walls she had so carefully constructed to shield her children and herself from the outside world felt fragile, fragile as glass.

A sudden knock at the door made her start. Her heart beat faster, unease settling deep in her chest. She wasn't expecting anyone—at least, no one who mattered to her. For a long moment, she hesitated, then cautiously approached and cracked open the door.

Standing there was Alec.

His gaze was steady, calm, but there was an undercurrent of something unreadable—a mixture of longing, regret, and determination. Violet's breath caught unexpectedly, surprise warring with a rising tide of emotion she had fought hard to suppress. For years, she had been careful to keep her life private, especially from him. And now, he was here unannounced.

Before Violet could gather her words, a small figure darted past Alec and rushed into the room with a burst of energy.

"Mummy!" Eloise's voice rang out, clear and joyous. She threw her arms around Violet's legs, a wide grin lighting up her face. "Eliot took my toy again! He won't give it back!"

Violet softened, crouching to scoop the excited child into a gentle embrace. "Did you now? Let's share, then, shall we?"

Eloise nodded eagerly but cast a quick glance at Alec, her expression turning mischievous. "He's so naughty! He hides my favorite doll!"

Violet felt a pang of tenderness and protectiveness she hadn't allowed herself in ages. It had been years since Alec had seen this side of her life—the children who were her world and secret.

Eloise tugged Violet's hand as though eager to guide her away before Alec could think to question.

"I'll take you to your room, darling. Let's leave the gentlemen to talk," Violet said softly, trying to mask her anxiety.

But Alec's deep voice stopped her.

"They're not twins, are they?" His question was quiet, but it carried the weight of long-held questions.

Violet met his gaze, the conflict swirling behind her eyes. "No," she said curtly, more sharply than she had intended.

Alec studied her for a long moment before stepping fully inside. "And are they mine?"

The room seemed to close in around Violet. She swallowed hard, the weight of her secret fighting to keep the fragile peace intact. "No," she replied quickly, her voice barely above a whisper.

Alec cocked his head, skepticism clear. "You're lying."

She shook her head with quiet desperation. "I'm not. Please don't make this harder."

Outside, Eliot's laughter rang faintly from another room, a sweet, innocent sound that sharpened the tension in the air.

Alec took a cautious step forward. "I want to believe you. I do. But I need the truth."

Violet's eyes filled with unshed tears. "The truth is complicated."

He softened, the anger ebbing from his stance. "Then help me understand."

For the first time in years, Violet allowed herself to meet Alec's gaze fully, searching for the man beneath years of pain and misunderstanding. The fragile thread between them had not snapped, but it trembled dangerously.

Eloise rejoined them, clutching a worn stuffed toy. "Mummy, Eliot says I'm bossy, but I'm not!" she declared stoutly, breaking the heavy silence.

Alec smiled, a small, genuine smile. The moment was delicate—woven from old wounds and new possibilities.

Violet took a deep breath. "Everything I've done, I did for them. For us."

He nodded slowly. "Then maybe… it's time we stop hiding from each other."

The light from the window caught in their eyes—the past, the present, and u

ncertain future mingling in a fragile, hopeful dance.
