Chapter 11 - Tynro’s notes pt 2

Korven falls to the ground onto a pile of loose papers lying on the floor of her apartment.

"Is this the power of a miracle?" Korven asks, staring in disbelief at the notebook.

The clock hits 13:00 as Korven picks up her dagger and slightly cuts her thumb.

A lighter wound allows Korven to access her memory ability, but with limitations. For example, a small cut would give her access to only a single memory, or just a specific part of one. Korven uses this power to look back at her notebook, a list of every miracle user in Kilder, each with a description of the ability. Due to the workings of her miracle, as long as the pain inflicted by the wound lasts, and she stays in her memory, she stays entirely safe from the real world.

Korven watches the dark smoke coming from her notebook grow and grow, taking over the room. She can't run because her ability has already been used; she can do nothing but focus on a single frame of a single memory.

The transportation begins.

Instead of entering her memory as a ghost, the pain is only enough to enter a single frame. In this single frame, she's looking through her notebook, looking at the page of every confirmed Miracle active in Kilder.

Korven reads every single addition, in hopes that one of the known miracles might be the source of the matte black smoke filling her room. Her memory exists outside of time, meaning no time passes while you are watching it.

Me – the ability to enter my memories through self-harm. Arune – able to change his form based on the temperature of the room he is in. Sheln – Flight when wearing white clothes, speed and stamina are determined by the weather. Blilinyc – Able to ignite some objects and cause major explosions. Klindene – able to survive without breathing, without a heart, and even, reportedly, when her brain was taken out of her head. Tenyk – invisibility. Wuulyn – the ability to talk to animals. Aldrick – Able to heal injuries and shield allies from harm. Quyin – not publicly known; all I know is that his power scales with the danger she's in. Cansyk – Can pin any pain inflicted on him or an ally onto his opponent. Rulin – Can increase the power of any launched projectile. Hrin – Speed, both physical and mental, can be increased by absorbing electricity. Silia – Can go invisible and take the form of whoever she is talking to.

Korven finishes reading through her memory,

"None of these works, who are you?" she asks the mist that has now taken over her entire room."

As if she were trapped in a cave a kilometre underground, Korven can't see a single drop of light. She wanders around the dark void that stands where her apartment used to be. As Korven walks, she realizes she should have already walked into one of her walls, or at least tripped on a piece of evidence lying on the ground. The only evidence that she is even alive is the high-pitched, undefinable noise that has been coming from the open book. Or at least where Korven thinks the old book was. Even the ever-present hum of her fridge and fluorescent lights has faded out.

Korven doesn't know where she is, but…

"Im not in my apartment anymore," she says to herself after she walks to what should be her desk.

Korven starts planning, trying to think her way out of the dark void she's trapped in.

"My miracle can't help me, and there's no miracle in Kilder that could trap me in shadows. If I don't know the source of the void, then how am I expected to get out?"

Korven pauses again, surrounded by a darkness that can't be cut through, no matter the light.

"What do I mean when I say I'm 'expected,' if someone, or something, put me in this void, why would they 'expect' me to get out?"

Korven looks down to check the ground. To her disbelief, she notices that she can't even see her own arms. The only reason she knows that they are still attached to her is that she still feels the light cut on her hand and the weight of the dagger in her hand. To preserve energy, she sits down to think. To think of a way out. A thought comes to her as she remembers Tynro's notebook. The seemingly incoherent, inconsequential ramblings that filled the last page. Korven tries to cut another one of her thumbs to allow her to replay the memory of her looking at the scribble-filled, insane notes. She closes her eyes and imagines the paper, but she fails to reappear in her memory. She chooses not to panic,

"Maybe the pain wasn't great enough." She says, trying to convince herself.

Korven feels the dagger in her hand, but can only see black, a dark black that is only accented by drops of dark crimson that seep out of her finger. Noticing this anomaly, Korven concludes that the dark that surrounds them isn't the dark that one sees in an empty box, but something else completely, something unnatural.

Remembering her fight against Silia, Korven starts to try to paint her arm with the only thing she can see in the dark void, her own blood. Korven starts to spread the blood along her arms as someone in the Telciun summers would spread sunscreen. As she starts to see her arms under the blood, Korven notices a difference,

"Where are my sleeves?"

In confusion, Korven looks again at her arm; this time, because of the blood, she can see it; what she can't see are the clothes that are supposed to be covering her. She tries to pat her body down to check if the rest of her clothes are gone, but her hands pass right through her body as if she were part of the void.

The noise grows louder the more Korven panics. Korven's realization that she is just floating arms and a head pushes her into a state of terror. The book's noise floods her mind as she screams in terror.

"AHHHHHH!!"

The book now emits a high-pitched screech, a sound that Korven feels she will never get used to. Panicking, Korven tries again to enter her memory, but even the pain that comes with her slitting her wrist isn't enough to activate her ability.

"Is my ability nullified here, or is it because I CAN'T FOCUS ON ANYTHING?!" she yells before falling to the invisible floor, her dagger falls out of her hand, making no noise. As Korven pats around the place, she finds her knife and realizes the rules of this void.

"If my body is gone, only my arms and head remain, and even my sleeves have disappeared, how is my dagger still on me?"
