Nora's POV
James glances down at the wooden stake protruding from his chest, more irritated than wounded. "Your aim needs work," he drawls, and the realization hits me like ice water. He allowed Beck to strike him just to humiliate her. He knew the makeshift weapon would miss his heart completely.
"Are you insane?" I snap, watching him wrench the branch from his flesh with casual indifference. "I thought you were going to die."
"Forgive me, love." He examines the bloodied stake before scanning the shadowy forest. James possesses supernatural vision and hearing that far surpass mine. He's tracking Beck's movements, and we both know her capture is inevitable.
She knows it too.
