Mack gives me a sharp nod of agreement. "I'll spread the word to the others about our strategy." His form shifts seamlessly back into his feline shape before he settles onto my lap. His teeth work quickly at the hexes binding my wrists, finally releasing me from the suffocating grip of the hagstone.
"Thank you," I breathe out, relief flooding through me as my powers return in full force. Mack presses his warm head against my palm, a silent reminder that I'm not facing this nightmare alone. I wrap my arms around his sleek body, drawing comfort from his steady presence. After pressing a gentle kiss to his fur, I release him and watch as he melts back into shadow form to carry our message to the others.
I gather the broken hexes and spread them across Gideon's mahogany desk.
