After a few minutes of tense, awkward silence, the Ashfords finally began moving toward the palace courtyard. The grand doors were flung open now, letting in a rush of cold night air that carried the scent of damp stone, horses, and the faint smoke from the torches lining the drive. Servants in dark livery hurried ahead with lanterns, lighting the path to the waiting carriages.
The royal guards stood at attention along the steps, wearing stiff red coats, and tall black shakos... watching the departing guests with impassive faces.
Noel walked in the middle of the group, feeling every step like he was walking into a trap he couldn't see.
Evelina clung to his left arm, still in her sapphire gown rustling with every movement. Arthur walked on his right, Bennett followed a step behind and Cedric brought up the rear.
Noel's question from earlier still hung in the air.
"So... when are we going home?"
