Chapter 9 - CHAPTER NINE — A Heart with Two Shadows

Smoke still drifted in the corridor, floating like quiet ghosts as Brielle slumped unconscious against the wall. Dominic held Elara as if she might vanish. Jax watched her with a look she couldn't read half awe, half something darker.

Elara's pulse thrashed violently.

Her palm still tingled with that strange, surging energy she couldn't explain.

I didn't mean to hurt her, Elara whispered.

Dominic tilted her chin up gently. You didn't kill her. You defended yourself.

She'll come back, Jax added. "With more men. More weapons. More desperation.

Elara didn't flinch.

Something about her felt… different now.

Stronger.

We need to leave, Dominic said. "Now.

He pulled her toward the exit, but Jax stepped in front of the door, blocking them.

No, Jax said calmly.

Dominic's eyes blazed. Move.

Jax didn't. You don't understand, Dom. The moment Elara used that power, every sensor in this building picked it up. Every radar. Every tracker. They know she awakened.

Dominic froze.

Elara felt her stomach twist.

Who's 'they'? she demanded.

Jax hesitated, then exhaled. The Council of Bloodlines. The people who control every alliance, every empire, every family that built your world, Dominic. The people who killed anyone who ever tried to leave.

Elara blinked. And… what does that have to do with me?

Jax met her eyes dark, steady, strangely gentle.

Because you're one of them.

Dominic stiffened.

The hall went silent.

Elara felt her heart drop. That doesn't make any sense. I grew up normal. Ordinary. My parents

Your parents weren't your parents, Jax said softly.

Elara's hands trembled. What?

Dominic grabbed Jax by the collar and slammed him against the steel wall, rage erupting.

What did you just say?

Jax didn't fight. He didn't even blink.

Let me talk, he said calmly.

Elara, Dominic said, breath shaking, don't listen to him.

I need to hear it, she whispered, her voice cracking. Please.

Dominic swallowed hard and let go of Jax, but stayed close, ready to tear him apart if he stepped out of line.

Jax straightened, eyes locked on Elara.

You were born into a forbidden bloodline, he said quietly. A hidden one. A branch the Council tried to erase because it threatened their control. And the prophecy… it wasn't about a girl with magic or fate. It was about a girl with influence.

Elara shook her head. Influence? I'm nobody.

No, Jax corrected, stepping closer. You're the heir of the line that was meant to overthrow them.

Dominic's jaw dropped.

It's the truth, Jax whispered. Her parents hid her. Passed her to people outside the elite. To keep her alive. But her blood is theirs. Her power is theirs. And now that it's awakened he breathed out they'll hunt her. Everywhere.

Elara's mind reeled.

Her entire life… a lie?

Her origins… stolen?

Her fate… predetermined by people she never knew?

She staggered back, dizzy.

Dominic caught her gently. Elara, breathe. Look at me. Just me.

His touch grounded her.

His warmth steadied her breath.

I don't want to be part of a prophecy, she whispered. I don't want any of this.

Dominic cupped her cheeks tenderly.

You don't have to be anything you don't want.

Jax stepped closer, voice lower. But you already are.

Elara looked between them Dominic's fierce, protective love, and Jax's dark, unwavering devotion.

Two shadows.

Both burning for her.

Both ready to fight the world over her.

Why do you care? she asked Jax shakily. You tried to hurt me. Now you're protecting me.

Jax's eyes softened.

Dangerously.

You think I knew who you were when I attacked you? he murmured. If I had known… I wouldn't have touched you. Not like that.

Dominic growled. Watch your mouth.

Jax ignored him, stepping closer to Elara, slow and deliberate.

When I saw you fight back last night, Jax said, voice almost reverent, I realized what you were. But it wasn't just the prophecy. It was you.

He reached up slowly, gently brushing a strand of hair behind her ear before Dominic grabbed his wrist and shoved him back.

She's not yours to touch.

Jax smirked. Ten keep a tighter grip.

Elara's cheeks burned.

Dominic's possessiveness made her heart race.

Jax's dangerous pull made her stomach flip.

And the twisted truth of her bloodline made her feel like she was unraveling.

We need to leave, jax said finally. The Council will be here within the hour.

And you're coming with us? Dominic asked with pure disgust.

Jax's grin widened. Whether you like it or not, pretty boy.

Dominic lunged

Elara grabbed his arm.

Stop, she pleaded.

He froze instantly.

Elara, he whispered, forehead almost touching hers, i won't lose you.

You won't, she said softly. But I need answers. And Jax has them.

Dominic's jaw clenched in tortured silence.

Jax stepped behind her, closer than necessary, his voice brushing her neck like heat.

I'll protect you, he murmured.

Dominic shoved him away, fire burning in his eyes. Back off.

The tension between them sparked like electricity hot, sharp, dangerously close to violence.

Elara felt the pressure of their nearness the pull of two very different flames.

Dominic: fierce, loyal, intense.

Jax: dark, steady, devastatingly drawn to her.

And for the first time…

Elara wondered if her heart was strong enough to hold both shadows.

Let's go, she whispered.

Dominic took her hand.

Jax walked at her other side.

They fled into the night as the first Council vehicles rolled toward the estate.

And Elara knew

Everything forbidden was only beginning.
