Chapter 10 - CHAPTER TEN — FLAWED HEARTS, FIERCE CHOICES

Lucian didn't move.

Not when the guards led Kade out of the hall, not when the entire ballroom froze in spiral shock, not even when dozens of eyes turned toward him some frightened, some curious, some savoring the chaos. His focus was fixed only on Alina, as if the entire world had narrowed into the space between their racing breaths.

Come with me, he said quietly too quietly. The kind of quiet that meant fury lived underneath.

He reached for her wrist, not forceful, but undeniably claiming, and led her out through a private back corridor as whispers rose in waves behind them. The moment the door shut, the noise was swallowed, leaving only the furious thud of her heart and the heavy echo of his footsteps.

Lucian she started.

Not yet, he cut in, voice low, dangerous.

He didn't drag her. He didn't have to.

She followed him instinctively.

He walked her into one of the private lounges a glass-walled room overlooking the glittering night city. The second the door clicked shut, he turned to her, jaw tight, expression unreadable.

How long, he asked softly, "have you known Kade was in the city?

Her breath caught.

This. This was what she had feared.

Not long, she whispered. I didn't… I didn't expect him to show up like that. I didn't even know he would be here tonight.

He exhaled, a mix of disbelief and something darker.

And yet he looked at you, Lucian said, taking a slow step toward her, like you belonged to him.

Her pulse fluttered. Lucian

And you looked back, he added.

That cut deeper.

Alina swallowed hard, heat building behind her ribs. He was my friend. My childhood friend. That's not something I can erase.

Lucian's eyes flickered jealousy, sharp and unhidden. I don't want you to erase him. I want you to be honest with me.

She stepped closer, heart pounding. I'm being honest.

Are you? he murmured. Because it felt like I was watching someone try to take you from me.

Her chest squeezed.

She didn't want this to break them. Not when she had finally admitted even to herself that she didn't want distance from him anymore. Not when everything between them had become too real, too alive.

Lucian, nothing was happening, she said. I didn't choose to see him tonight. I didn't plan anything. I'm here with you.

His jaw flexed again, but his anger wasn't the explosive type. It was the tightly controlled kind that scared her more.

Alina, he said, softer now, i'm not angry because he was here. I'm angry because I saw the fear in your eyes when he called your name.

She froze.

He stepped closer, close enough that she could feel the heat of him, the pull of him, the power in the air shifting like a storm.

Tell me why, he whispered. Tell me what he knows. Or what you're trying to protect him from. Tell me why you looked at him like he was a ghost walking out of your past.

Her breath trembled.

Because Kade is a ghost. Because Kade carries a past she has never spoken aloud. Because Kade has secrets tied not only to her but to her mother, to the warnings she grew up hearing, to the very reason she was never allowed near men like Lucian.

Because Kade returning… meant all those buried things were rising again.

I—I can't, she whispered.

Alina.

His voice was a plea now. A crack in the ice.

She shook her head. Not yet. I don't even know how to explain it. I'm trying to understand it myself.

Silence fell heavy between them.

Then Lucian did something unexpected.

He reached out and cupped her face, thumbs brushing her cheeks gently, as if she were something fragile and fierce at the same time.

I don't want perfection from you,he murmured. I want the truth. I can handle anything except you shutting me out.

Her throat tightened.

His touch grounded her. Heated her. Melted the fear sitting behind her ribs.

She leaned slightly into his palm.

I don't want to shut you out, she whispered. I just… don't want you to see the parts of my life that are messy. The parts I don't even want myself to remember.

Lucian's gaze deepened soft, possessive, full of that unwavering intensity that both scared and anchored her.

Alina, he said, voice low and certain, the parts you think could push me away are exactly the parts I'm willing to carry with you. If you let me.

Her breath caught.

Something inside her cracked not badly, but open.

And she let him pull her into his arms.

Her cheek pressed against his chest, and his hand settled at the back of her head, cradling her like she was the only thing he needed to hold onto in this moment. He wasn't angry anymore.

He was scared.

And that realization hit her deeper than all his fury.

He feared losing her.

Lucian, she murmured. I'm here. I'm not leaving.

His grip tightened, just a fraction. His breath brushed the top of her hair.

Then I'll fight every person who tries to take you away, he whispered. Even if it's your past.

Her heart nearly burst.

But the moment was short-lived.

Because the door slammed open.

Both of them turned sharply as Damian rushed inside Lucian's head of security, rarely flustered but undeniably pale tonight.

Sir, Damian said, breathless, we have a situation.

Lucian's body tensed. What kind of situation?

Damian hesitated. One that involves Miss Alina.

Her stomach dropped.

Lucian stepped in front of her immediately instinctively, protectively. Speak.

Damian swallowed. Someone just sent a message through the Hale tower security line. A direct transmission. They bypassed every layer of encryption to do it.

Lucian's voice turned deadly. Someone broke into my system?

Yes, Damian said. And they left a picture.

Alina's blood ran cold.

A picture of who? Lucian demanded.

Damian met her eyes.

Of her mother.

Alina's knees nearly gave out.

What? she breathed. "That's impossible how

There's more, Damian said, glancing between them. The message was addressed directly to Alina. And the sender left a name.

He handed Lucian a tablet.

Lucian's grip tightened as he read.

His expression darkened like a storm swallowing the horizon.

What name? Alina asked, breath shaking.

Lucian turned the screen toward her.

Her heart stopped.

Written in sharp, bright red code across the display were two words:

WELCOME BACK KADE.

Alina's breath hitched as Lucian's presence turned lethal beside her.

Kade? she whispered. But… he—he wouldn't

Lucian's voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

He already has.

The room spun.

The past she feared…

The secrets she buried…

The danger she hoped she'd never face again…

Had just come for her.

And this time, it wasn't hiding.

This time, it was walking straight into her life.

Lucian turned to her, jaw rigid, fury shimmering beneath the surface.

Alina, he said, you're going to tell me everything. Now.

Her pulse hammered.

Because she knew…
