Chapter 1 - Found myself in his arms

MISA

When I looked down, a shudder went through my spine. October's cold breeze flew freely. I was standing on a bridge, climbing on the side railings. It wasn't on my bucket list. I wanted to live. I planned many things in my life. But that never happened. Whatever happened, it turned out I am a loser. I took a steady breath. I never thought my dream to go outside of the country, the dream to have someone like an angel, would end like this.

Jump, jump, jump.

I took a deep breath again. It was my endgame. No one is going to hear about Misa Kim, who took science to prove that she's better than her late sister.

Maybe covetousness and insecurity were the ones who brought me here. I was a selfish, jealous girl. I agree.

Jump, Jump, Jump.

I pushed my legs. I stumbled, and my chest hollowed when I was in the air. Heading towards the river surface. I closed my eyes. But my body jerked.

Am I dead?

I kept my eyes closed. But why didn't I touch the water? Shouldn't I be drowned? To feel pain? But instead, I felt the gentle breeze on my face. And I was feeling a sudden warmth around me. I gathered my courage and opened my eyes. My eyes shot open at what I was seeing…

I was in the embrace of a man. A horrifyingly handsome man with a mullet cut, brown hair, deep black eyes, sharp-like-cheekbones, and fragile rosebud lips said, "You shouldn't do those." His honey-coated husky voice was like music. His chest vibrated when he spoke.

But I blinked. Where am I?

Wait. ARE WE FLYING?

But my words stuck in my throat. I moved my torso back and forth. He growled, "Hey, girl. Don't move too much. If you fall, your mission will be successful." He shook his head. He landed in a narrow alley. I jumped from him, but I lost my balance and fell on my butt. "Aaaaaaahhh!" I screamed with all my might. He simply plugged his fingers in his ear. "Whoa, whoa, don't make this noise." He closed his eyes tightly. But my hands were trembling. A hollowness in my chest, widening like a spreading gyre. I stumbled back. "GET AWAY!"

He raised his eyebrows. "What are you fearing? Death? You just tried to jump off from that bridge. And I heard humans' lives are too fragile." He stepped forward. Caused me to stumble back, but my body pressed against the wall. "Hey. I won't cause any harm." He expanded his hands towards me. "How can I trust you?!" I was afraid. My hot tears streaming down from my eyes. He was startled. But not too much. His deep eyes widened every little bit, almost unnoticeable, but it did. "I'm an angel." He paused. He scratched his neck. "Well, not an accurate angel. But Karmic angel." He knelt before me. "I'm the one who balances the karmic debts."

I blink. Everything looked like a prank. But why am I still believing it's true? Perhaps it really was. He still offered a hand. This time, I slowly took it. He pulled me on my legs. But I immediately pulled my hands off. He chuckled. "Don't you think you're a bit noisy?" Irritation rushed down through my veins. "You were fucking flying like a fucking bird—no. A fucking bat! Who fucking kind of human would fucking smile?!" I yelled in vexation.

He dramatically covered his mouth. "Omen. You use impure words too much."

I didn't react anymore. I really don't know how to react. My brain was puzzled. I felt my head spin. Without thinking anything, I started to walk away.

He stood frozen. Soon I saw the lights of Main Street. I sighed in relief when I stepped out of that alley. But I looked up. I got blinded by the sharp source of light, which was rushing towards me. An atrocious loud horn sound stabbed into my ears. I raised my forehead before my eyes to see. I was blind, mute, and deaf at that moment. My chest was crushing inside my ribs. As adrenaline took control, I screamed. But I closed my eyes. For a few minutes everything went blank.

I opened my eyes. I choked on my own spit. I was soaked by my own sweat.

Am I dead again?

But again I found myself in that same handsome man's embrace. This time I didn't panic.

What was actually happening to me? Am I stuck in an endless loop where I will face death and be saved by this man? Or was I in a worse nightmare?

"Well… You need to survive." I heard him, using his rich, honey-coated, soft voice. We were actually on the rooftop of a nearby building. I was lying on his lap.

"What do you mean?" I asked. My voice froze to a cracky whisper.

"See, even if you attempt suicide, that is also your fate. And you were about to be buried under that weird big piece of metal, which was also your fate. So whatever you choose. That is your fate. Actually this is the technique to balance karma." He explained. *Piece of metal means a car.

He sighed. But suddenly, "Please, miss. Can you give me shelter?"

My eyes got shot open. And I again jumped from him, "What the hell?!"

This man, or mmm… Whatever he was gulped. His cockiness and teasing tone were gone. He simply knelt before me. And lowered his head.

"I will save you from your fate. Your fate is death. But I can change that. Please, miss. I will not cross lines." He looked at me with frailty.

I swallowed. But maybe he read my thoughts. He hurriedly reached for his pocket and took out a….. A bracelet that was made of crystals: "You can take this. You can control me, call me, and make me do anything you want except impure works." He said desperately. I tilted my head a little. And took the bracelet in my palm. My eyes sparkled with amusement when I noticed he shivered. I exhale a deep breath. And focused.

Stick out your tongue.

I thought.

And he did. His eyes widened. But he did say, "Okay, stand up." He did. "Dance." He did. "Cry." He did.

My eyes sparkled more. Was it an open blessing? Was I getting blessed? He again knelt before me.

"Please… Keep me, my master." He whispered.

Right at that moment I knew. I was going to create chaos.
