Audrey rarely answered calls from unknown numbers. Strangers had always been a cautionary presence in her life, something to avoid rather than engage with. So when her phone began vibrating in her palm, sharp and insistent, she already knew who was on the other end.
Her thumb hovered over the screen, ready to hang up before hesitation could even creep in.
Before she could act, Danielle's hand shot across the table, catching her wrist. "Hey—why are you hanging up?" she asked, frowning, eyes narrowing. "Who's calling? Why aren't you answering it?"
Audrey didn't lift her gaze. "Who do you think?" she said flatly.
Recognition flickered across Danielle's face, sharp and sudden. Her professional instincts kicked in fully, lawyer mode activated. "Rowan?" she said softly at first. Then, firmer: "Don't hang up yet. Answer it. Let's hear what he wants."
