Chapter 40 - Chapter 40 : Town Of Axel

It is said that behind every very great adventurer, there is a great receptionist…

Orion sure believed it after meeting Eina, though in his case, any receptionist would have been great.

The slight stroke of narcissism aside, he noticed just how beautiful the woman was in front of him.

Blonde hair, bright eyes, posture straight and professional—and yes, an impressive chest that made it slightly difficult to maintain eye contact without conscious effort.

Not that Orion himself had an issue, he had experience by this point.

"Ahem…"

Orion cleared his throat and focused very hard on her face. Only the face.

"Welcome to the Adventurer's Guild of Axel," the receptionist said cheerfully. "How may I help you today?" said the woman in a cheery tone.

However, this cheery tone was more like a forced habit when talking with others, than what he had seen in Hestia, who was a small ball of energy all day long.

Orion glanced sideways.

Marika stood just behind him, arms still crossed, expression carved from pure displeasure. Good thing he was the only one who could see her.

Orion couldn't help but just sigh at this.

The radiant, regal, and absolutely not speaking to him, goddess was definitely mad at him.

He sighed internally. 'Is it wrong to drag a goddess outside a dungeon?' He grumbled internally, seeing how Marika looked at him from the side eye.

"I'm… new," Orion said, turning back to the counter. "Looking to register. Also possibly asking where I am, exactly. Just in case."

The receptionist blinked. "Axel Town."

That single name settled into his bones like a final stamp.

'Okay, no denying it then. If the busty receptionist wasn't sign enough then this was an inevitable proof.

I'm in Konosuba world…' Orion sighed in relief.

Behind him, Marika made a quiet, unimpressed huff. Not a word—just judgment.

"Yes," Orion nodded, forcing a polite smile. "That tracks."

The receptionist slid him a form. "You'll need to fill this out. Name, age, class, special skills, religion…"

"Ooh..Okay. Thank you." Orion gingerly took the paper.

Marika did not look at the receptionist. She did not look at anyone. She stared at a distant wall like it had personally betrayed her.

"Come on goddess, don't be like that. See, as I told you, the place is completely harmless…" Orion whispered to her.

Marika snorted.

He leaned back slightly, lowering his voice. "I told you I'd be fine. Look—town, guild, roads. No immediate world-ending threat. We'll be fine."

She looked down at him then, eyes sharp but… worried.

[You are supposed to listen to your goddess, I told you not to come here…]

She replied quietly.

For a moment, the teasing chaos of the guild faded. Orion sighed.

"Sorry… but come on, you weren't even listening to me. And as you can see, the place is completely safe," he said. "That counts for something, right?"

Marika looked away again—but this time, the edge of her anger dulled. However, the irritation was there all along.

She wasn't gonna make it easy for him to coax her. Nope…

The receptionist clapped her hands softly. "Well! Welcome to Axel! All your paperwork is fine. You just have to pay the onboarding fee for the guild membership and we can have you entered…"

Orion smiled thinly. "Oh…fee huh." He completely forgot there was a fee involved. He doubted these people would be convinced by Valis from Orario. They used Eris as their currency here.

Sigh…

"Hmm, can we wait on that for a minute? I'll come back soon with the money…" he said awkwardly.

"Hmmm, it's fine, no problem." She smiled.

"Good, thanks for understanding." He quickly retreated. He had to somehow make money.

His eyes went towards the quest board of the guild and darted to a simple hunting quest.

Non-members are of course not allowed to take a mission, however, if he just completed the mission beforehand and told the receptionist to use the money for his onboarding fee, it should work, right!

Because he had no other way.

Sighing, he memorised the quest and dragged his body outside…

Everything started when he learned that he could travel the world and come to the home world of the boss he was fighting.

He wished to come since fighting Beldia here would be much easier with others, however, there was a catch: he could actually die here, so he had to be careful.

Marika of course didn't wish him to come, and all the misunderstanding started.

While she didn't want him to go, he came anyway. Quite literally fell to this world like how he entered the headless knight's boss area.

One moment there was weightlessness, the familiar sensation of being dragged between worlds, and the next he was tumbling out of the sky and landing unceremoniously in an open grassland.

This time, however, it was different. No monsters, no immediate threat—just wind rolling through tall grass, a clear blue sky, and, most importantly, a dirt road cutting cleanly through the land.

At the end of that road stood a town. Which led him here.

Marika appeared beside him shortly after, visibly displeased. She hadn't wanted him to come here at all, and her silence spoke louder than any lecture.

Orion, still sore and disoriented, did his best to reassure her all the way as they walked until Axel arrived and then the guild. He joked, promised caution, and insisted—again—that he would be fine.

But an angry goddess is an angry goddess. God bless this wonderful soul...

Orion had barely taken two steps out of the guild hall when something slammed into his chest like a rocket out of a launcher pad.

"Oof—!"

A flash of blue hair filled his vision as the girl bounced backwards, arms flailing wildly, on the edge of falling butt first. She nearly fell flat on her back, saved only by sheer luck and a dramatic windmill of limbs.

Orion, for once, really wished to see her fall on her butt, but that was just his intrusive thoughts winning over.

"Hey! Watch where you're going!" she snapped immediately, pointing at Orion like he'd personally offended her bloodline. "You could've seriously hurt me, you know?!"

Orion blinked. Once. Then twice.

She had blue hair. Bright blue eyes. For a second, she captured his eyes so strongly that he couldn't see anywhere else.

Yeah, she was hot. Beautiful to be more accurate. And Orion knew who this was.

"You ran into me missy... don't try to push blame," Orion said flatly.

"I absolutely did not," the girl huffed. "You were clearly standing in my walking path."

"True, though only if your walking means bursting inside like you're running a marathon."

Before the argument could escalate into something loud enough to summon the guards, a tired voice sighed from behind her.

"Aqua… shut up...you literally weren't looking where you were going."

Orion's gaze shifted past her shoulder—and there he was. Brown hair, green tracksuit, dead eyes that had already seen too much of life despite clearly being new to this one.

Kazuma.

Orion's lips curled up seeing the embodiment of Gender Neutrality.

"See? Even my party member agrees with me!" Aqua declared proudly, jabbing a thumb backward.

Kazuma stared at her. "…I was agreeing with him. You idiot."

"Waa! Kazuma, you traitor!" Aqua's eyes immediately went misty. Fluttering her hands like a butterfly trying to take off from there, or make Kazuma brush her off like a Pokemon with wing attack.

Orion rubbed his temple. "Is there something wrong with her head!"

"Yeah... sorry about that. Just ignore her."

"Oi, who you're saying has a wrong head..." Aqua snapped at Kazuma, pouting.

Kazuma just ignored her.

"So, you two are in a team or something!"

Kazuma stiffened. "How did you—"

"Because she's still alive and yelling," Orion replied calmly.

Aqua gasped. "Rude! I'm a goddess, I'll have you know! If anything, it's this HikiNeet who should be grateful, because I'm his partner."

Kazuma again ignored Aqua and looked at Orion like he found a man after his own heart. "Finally, someone who understands."

That earned him a shriek, a lecture about divine dignity, and several exaggerated gestures that nearly knocked over a passing adventurer.

[That girl… she carried divine power within her.]

Marika, who was giving Orion the silent treatment most of the day, suddenly spoke, eyes narrowing on Aqua like she found horses walking on two legs.

"Yup... she is." Orion smirked and whispered so only Marika heard him.
