Chapter 1 - The Rumors Were True Becoming a Grand Mage at 30

"But I refuse!"

"...Mmm, even with all this pleading, it's no good, is it?"

Before me, a very petite girl, about the age of an upper elementary school student, is bowing her head towards me.

She has silky blonde hair and clear, gem-like blue eyes. Most notably, her ears are long and pointed. She is a member of a race called elves, and though she appears to be a young girl, she is well over 100 years old.

"Even if Anon asks, it's impossible. Why in the world would I have to be a teacher at a magic academy now?"

"Gil, you said you were a teacher in your past life, didn't you?"

That's right, my past life. I'm what they call a reincarnator. I was born and raised in Japan, died at the young age of 35, and for some reason, with those memories, I was reborn into this world as Gil, and I'm now 28 years old.

"It's true I mentioned I was a teacher while doing research in my past life, but you remembered that well."

"I also heard that the white coat you're wearing is the same kind of clothing you wore in your past life."

"Ah, this is the mark of a researcher!"

My current attire is a shirt and a white coat. After all, white coats are essential for researchers and mad scientists. Magic users and scientists in this world are probably similar. However, unfortunately, no one else in this world wears a white coat... I wish I could start a trend.

"Well, putting aside the magnificence of the white coat, I don't have time to be a teacher right now. I'm busy with magic research."

"Hmph, didn't you just say you finished your research recently?"

"Ah, I've made some progress with my research on spatial magic. I'm about to start researching gravity magic next."

"You magic-obsessed fool..."

It might be what they call a cheat ability, but in this world, I have a talent for magic. Coupled with my past life memories, I've diligently researched magic since I was young, and as a result, I've obtained the title of Great Sage at a young age.

Magic in this world is very similar to mathematics in my past life; it's complex but very interesting. Just like solving difficult equations, there's an indescribable sense of exhilaration when I can construct magic incantations without any waste. Well, this might also be related to my research-loving nature in my past life.

Adventurer, a common profession for those reincarnated into another world, was an option, but I chose to attend a magic academy where I could research magic, and I've been a magic researcher ever since.

"There's no helping it then... Gil, I'll use that favor now! Lend me your strength!"

"Hmm, is this a problem where Anon would use that favor...?"

We're not lovers, but Anon and I have known each other since I graduated from the academy, and they are one of the few close friends to whom I've spoken about my past life. I also did many reckless things when I was younger, so they've helped me out quite a bit.

Without going into detail, I owe Anon a big favor. I never thought they would use that favor at a time like this.

"Indeed. Bounce National Magic Academy is a magic academy with a long history, but the quality of its teachers has drastically declined, and it's in quite a bind..."

"Heh, I see my alma mater has fallen so far. Well, why don't you just leave it be? Those with motivation and talent will grow on their own, even if left alone."

Bounce National Magic Academy, which Anon became headmaster of last year, is also my alma mater. When I attended the academy, it was famous enough to be considered the country's number one magic academy, so it's a shame it has declined so much.

"The problem is that even those with motivation and talent are finding it difficult to grow in this environment..."

"That's truly unacceptable for an educational institution..."

Then there's no point in it being an academy for learning magic.

"Alright, if I can repay that favor from back then, I'll do it. My research is winding down, and I've been cooped up in my lab for the past seven or eight years, so this will be good for me."

"R-really?!"

"Yeah. However, I was a teacher in my past life, but I can't guarantee I'll be a good teacher. I've never taken on any disciples, so I imagine I'll teach somewhat strictly."

"Mmm, that's fine! Gil, who holds the title of Great Sage, is a commoner, but you have considerable authority. If the academy's teachers fawn all over the children of powerful nobles, it's far better to be taught strictly."

"Then fire all those incompetent teachers!"

What are grown adults doing being scared of a bunch of kids...

Well, it's true that unlike my previous world, there are social standings like nobles, which makes things more complicated. However, when I was at the academy, the teachers who were supposed to be teaching didn't fawn over the students.

"The teachers are only good at useless social maneuvering, and it's not easy to fire them. Furthermore, seeing such teachers has made the students' attitudes even more arrogant. From my position, I can't strongly confront them, and it feels like I'm getting an ulcer..."

I can't believe Anon, of all people, would let out such a whimper. When it comes to combat, Anon is far stronger than me.

"I understand. I'll do what I can, so cheer up."

"That's my beloved Gil!"

"...You, absolutely do not do this inside the academy."

This one always hugs me whenever something happens...

I doubt they'll do anything like that at the academy, but if students were to see it, it would only lead to trouble.

◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆

"Hey~, where are we going after school today?"

"They say a new dessert shop opened on Belock Street, want to go?"

"Ah, that sounds good!"

"Hey, why don't we just ditch today and go somewhere?"

"Nice, let's go!"

"........ "

Hmm, it's ten times worse than I imagined...

A few days after accepting Anon's request, I was hired as a temporary teacher for defensive magic at Bounce National Magic Academy. Unlike part-time lecturers in my previous world, this employment contract grants me the same authority as regular teachers for one year.

Today, for my first class, I visited class 1-B, and it's like a zoo. The majority of the twenty-odd students are making noise as they please, ignoring me as I enter the classroom.

Since I'm a temporary teacher, they're probably taking me for a fool. If all the classes are like this, it's not just a class collapse; the entire academy is likely collapsing.

...It's really noisy, though. Just raising my voice normally won't get their attention. Well, as a magic user, I have no intention of raising my voice.

"Now then..."

I thrust my right hand forward as if to show the students, and construct magic without incantation. Then, the Silence magic I constructed is activated, and a soundproof barrier is erected in the classroom and in my ears. I then construct and activate amplification magic.

Since I deliberately cast the magic in a way that would be understood, a few students immediately noticed and, like me, erected magical soundproof barriers around their ears or covered their ears with their hands and buried their faces in their desks.

Hmm, it seems there are at least a few decent students, which relieves me slightly.

*Snap*

"Whoa!?"

"M-my ears!"

The majority of the students, startled by the loud crack of my fingers using amplification magic, screamed.

"Wh-what are you doing, suddenly!"

"Hey, it's too loud!"

*Snap*

"Whoa, again!?"

"Hey, stop that noise!"

*Snap, snap*

"Gyaaaaaah!"

"Kyaaaaaah!"

I continue to snap my fingers until these brats who are looking down on me shut up.

Come to think of it, when I was in elementary school in my previous world, the principal used to do this during morning assemblies, seeing how many seconds it would take for everyone to quiet down. Well, these brats here will never stop making noise, so I'll have to force them into silence.

" " "......." " "

Finally, I confirm that the brats have stopped screaming by having them cover their ears with both hands, then I lower my right hand and dispel the magic.

"Alright, from today onwards, I am your temporary defensive magic teacher, Geek. Though it's for a short period, I'm counting on you, brats. First, take your seats."

I'm keeping my real name in this world, Gil, a secret. If I, who received the title of Great Sage, were to work at this academy, it would cause all sorts of troublesome things, so I'm hiding my identity.

"Wh-what are you talking about!"

"What do you think you're doing so suddenly!"

"Calling us brats, you temporary teacher!"

"......."

After I finish my brief self-introduction, the brats start making noise again.

It feels more like I'm a zookeeper at a zoo than a teacher at this academy...

" " "...!" " "

As I raise my right hand again to snap my fingers, the brats cover their ears and fall silent once more. Seeing this, I lower my hand again.

"If you can't even show respect to your teacher, then you're fittingly called brats. If you want to be called by your names, first call me 'sensei'."

This way of speaking might get a teacher in my previous world instantly dismissed, but Anon has granted me permission for some remarks and physical punishment. I dislike these brats who just whine without understanding the harshness of the world and obstruct students who are actually motivated.

"How dare a mere temporary teacher speak to me, the eldest son of Count Carlyle!"

"Lord Gale, I doubt this commoner knows anything about nobles, does he?"

"Ahhh, you've done it now. You were just hired as a temporary teacher for this academy, and you'll be unemployed tomorrow."

Three people who were chatting without taking their seats approach me.

The slightly plump brat at the front is Gale Carlyle. Indeed, a count is a high noble rank, and there aren't many dukes or marquises in this academy.

"Intimidating someone with your family name right off the bat on your first meeting is like declaring that you yourself lack any ability. Besides, it's your father who holds the title; you're just a brat, aren't you?"

"Y-you! Are you insulting the Carlyle name!"

"Lord Gale, let's take care of this guy!"

"...Were you listening? The one who was insulted was you, not the Carlyle family."

You're the brat, and I didn't insult the Carlyle family. Frankly, I don't give a damn about noble family names.

"You! I won't forgive you any longer! Take this, Lightning!"

The brat thrusts both hands forward, and a moment later, lightning magic is unleashed from both of his hands.

*Snap*

"What!? Gyaaaaaah!"

However, as I snap my fingers, the lightning is reflected by a semi-transparent wall just before it hits me, striking the brat who cast it.

Hmm, his magic construction is too slow, and he can't even deal with the magic he casts himself. Moreover, suddenly firing offensive magic at a teacher... things are really beyond repair.
