Chapter 8 - Saving Amy

Eliana's Pov

I will do whatever it takes to cure the zombies, l silently promised. My heart skipped a beat when l remembered my mom as well as Amy who was still at the university. Please, you have to take me to my mom and Amy. I need to make sure that they are okay. I pleaded with them, hoping they will understand. Can l contact my mom? I asked. Xathah nodded, handing me a communication device, it looked similar to a phone but much fancier. I took the device, my heart racing as l dialed her number. The phone rang and rang but she couldn't answer. Amy was at the university when the outbreak happened and l haven't heard from her since. I was torn between my mom and Amy but we decided to go for Amy since she was much closer. My grip on the phone tightened. We will get the ship headed to the university, Eliana. The others focused on controlling the panels. I was going to find them and l was going to help the king, whoever he was. The ship's engines roared to life and we took off. After half an hour, we landed on the university grounds. I hesitated before going in, l felt a hand on my left shoulder and looked up to meet Xathah's striking violet eyes. A cold heavy metal was pressed into my hands. I stared at the gun, this is a standard Polarie blaster. You are going to need it. Need it for what?

I couldn't even hold it properly. He adjusted my position, his hands firm but gentle. Like this, feet shoulder -width apart, knees slightly bent, now wrap your fingers around the handle. I tried to follow his instructions but the gun felt too foreign. I felt a wave of panic as l struggled to hold it steady.

I can't do this. I can't shoot a gun. What if l accidentally fired it hurting someone?

My train of thoughts was interrupted. Don't worry, you will get used to it. We will train you. But l wasn't so sure. The university was now a ghost town. The usually bustling halls was now eerily silent except for the occasional groans and shuffling footsteps. Amy's face was etched in my mind, l had to find her. Xathah, go back to the others. I will go in and check on Amy. Alone. He raised an eyebrow but l shot him a pleading look. Please, l don't want to scare her away. Xathah hesitated, then nodded. Alright, be quick. We will be right outside. I nodded, moving quickly before he changes his mind. As l approached the gym, l saw a figure huddled over a bench. My eyes widened in horror as l took in the sight of Amy, now a zombie. The familiar face was pale, devoid of all the warmth and youthful exuberance from before. Her eyes were cloudy and lifeless. A gasped escaped my lips as l stumbled backwards in shock, my heart shattering. But as l looked into her eyes, something strange happened. The zombies around us began to slow down, their groans fading into the background. Amy's eyes though empty seemed to focus on me. I felt a surge of calm washing over me. I remembered Xathah's words, you have the power to calm the zombies,Eliana. I took a step forward, my voice soft. Amy ...its me Eli. The zombie Amy's eyes locked into mine and for a fleeting moment, l saw a glimmer of recognition. The creature's movement slowed down, it's gaze holding mine. Then in a barely above a whisper, she spoke, Eli....ana ...run. The spell was broken and the zombies around us moved forward. I quickly grabbed Amy's hand. The zombies stopped, confused as l pulled Amy along with me, the two of us fleeing the gym. As we burst into the hallway, l realised that Amy was still with me, still connected with me. But for how long?
