The moment I heard Veronica had come back, every nerve in my body went on high alert.
Those distinctive heels clicked closer down the hallway, and I knew without a doubt it was her returning.
I straightened in my chair, radiating the commanding presence I was known for. The thought crossed my mind: Apologize to her? Never going to happen.
Cecile's face lit up as Veronica entered. "Veronica, you're back!"
"Cecile, Camila," Veronica responded with that polite tone of hers, her eyes finding Daniel for just a moment. I caught the silent exchange between mother and son—some unspoken communication passing between them.
Camila jumped in, "We heard about Joseph's transfer situation, and we're on your side. Cecile thinks you handled it perfectly."
"Absolutely, Veronica. Thank you for protecting Joseph," Cecile chimed in, clearly hoping Veronica wouldn't hold last night's harsh words against me.
