Veronica's POV
"I just care about Joseph, nothing more. You're reading too much into this," I said, keeping my explanation short.
Leonardo's expression shifted, and I could see the wheels turning in his mind. Something had clicked for him, though I wasn't sure what.
His eyes studied my face with an intensity that made my pulse quicken. "Wait," he said slowly, his voice dropping to almost a whisper. "What if... what if you're not just some random woman who happened to care about my son?"
My stomach dropped. Where was he going with this?
"What if there's a reason you'd risk everything for Joseph?" His breathing grew shallow. "What if you're his real mother?"
The air left my lungs. How had he figured it out so quickly?
"And if that's true..." Leonardo's voice cracked with emotion. "Then you'd be Trish. The woman I've been hunting for all these years."
My heart hammered against my ribs. The way he said her name - my name - held years of longing and desperation.
