The second Anderson is gone, I take the cards from Jade. What could he have written? She's watching me, waiting, but I don't open them. I want to be alone when I do.
"What was all that?" Jade asks as she starts the car. She drives us to school without getting another word from me. Once she parks, I stuff the cards deep into my bag.
Jade shifts, turning in her seat to face me. "I thought you two were doing better."
"We were." I stare at my hands, flexing my fingers. Anderson's shifts in mood are impossible to predict. She keeps waiting, so I finally let out a sigh and lean my head against the window. "He was teaching me to drive. He wouldn't put on his seatbelt."
"Oh," she says, quiet.
"Yeah."
