"Hmph, you better be okay. If you're not, I'll go to Hades' Palace and beat you up," Liu Ruyue said, biting her lip with red-rimmed eyes. Her tone was a mix of reproach and determination.
"Alright, alright, everything will be fine," Sun Zhewen comforted, pulling Liu Ruyue into his arms.
"Spend this weekend with me, okay?" Liu Ruyue's voice came muffled from Sun Zhewen's embrace, laced with a hint of pleading.
"Yeah," Sun Zhewen replied, holding her tightly.
"We won't see each other as often after this," Liu Ruyue's voice was filled with reluctance and helplessness.
"Yeah," Sun Zhewen simply responded, his heart a mix of emotions.
The night was deep. The two of them held each other tightly, their body temperatures and heartbeats seemingly the only anchors in this uncertain world.
The weekend was like a final gathering, as they desperately took from each other.
It was just after starting work on Monday morning when the transfer order arrived, instructing Sun Zhewen to go to Chengguan Town Police Station as soon as possible. Upon arrival, he went directly to the director's office and reported his presence. Director Ding, sporting a bulbous nose, opened the door and asked, "You are?"
"I'm Sun Zhewen, here to report today."
"Ah, Deputy Director Sun, you've finally arrived! I've been waiting with bated breath."
"Director Ding, you're too kind."
"You're welcome, you're welcome. Right, I'll have Xiao Lin take you to your office first, and then we'll have an introductory meeting. How does that sound?"
"I'll follow your arrangements, Director Ding." Director Ding breathed a sigh of relief, seeing that this young man, who had used connections and money to get the position of deputy director, wasn't difficult to deal with. His WeChat message notification suddenly rang. It was from Chen Qingyan: "Are you at the police station?"
"Yes, just arrived," he replied quickly.
"I'm coming over right away," Chen Qingyan's message followed.
"What are you coming for?" he was a little puzzled.
"To support you, of course. I'm afraid those old hands won't be convinced by you. I'll let them know who's behind you," Chen Qingyan's tone was firm and unquestionable.
"Hehe, you're becoming more and more like the Empress Dowager," he couldn't help but tease.
"Ugh, what Empress Dowager? I'm your wife," Chen Qingyan said coquettishly.
"Yes, yes, yes. Then hurry up. The meeting will start soon," he smiled helplessly.
"Okay, I'm on my way and will be there soon. Come meet me at the door, haha." Chen Qingyan sounded to be in a good mood.
"Alright, I'll wait for you at the door." Sun Zhewen didn't dare to delay. He immediately changed into a brand new police uniform and carefully adjusted his collar and cuffs in the mirror, making sure his attire was neat and proper. He took a deep breath, walked out of the office, and waited quietly outside the Chengguan Town Police Station.
The other people in the police station saw the newly appointed deputy director standing outside the door, as if he was waiting for someone, and they whispered among themselves. Some envied that he had reached such a high position at such a young age, some envied his good luck, and some didn't care about him, thinking that he had only gotten there due to connections. The young female police officers, seeing the tall and handsome Sun Zhewen, couldn't help but let their eyes shine, secretly admiring him. But whether they knew the inside story or not, they didn't dare to go up and talk to him easily. After all, everyone knew that the new deputy director obviously had a backer.
A few minutes later, a car from the town smoothly stopped outside the police station. Chen Qingyan elegantly pushed open the car door and walked straight over with confident steps. She was wearing professional attire, her makeup was exquisite, and her eyes showed authority.
"Let's go, I want to see your office," she said in a serious tone, with a hint of impatience.
Sun Zhewen nodded and led her into the office.
As soon as she entered the office, Chen Qingyan seemed to have changed into a different person, eagerly pouncing over, and coquettishly said, "Ugh, I've missed you so much."
Sun Zhewen quickly stopped her from going any further, his expression tense, and said, "This is the office of the police station, don't do this."
Chen Qingyan's face flashed with displeasure, and she complained, "Why haven't you contacted me these past few days? Not even a message."
Sun Zhewen explained helplessly, "I didn't want to inconvenience you."
"Hmph, excuses. Are you with that vixen?" Chen Qingyan's eyes were filled with suspicion and interrogation.
"She's in Haicheng," Sun Zhewen quickly explained.
"I'm not talking about her. I'm talking about someone else?" Chen Qingyan stared intently into Sun Zhewen's eyes, unwilling to miss any subtle change in his expression.
"Who?" Sun Zhewen was completely baffled.
"Stop playing dumb. Don't think you can fool me." Chen Qingyan's tone carried a hint of anger.
"I haven't, have I?" Sun Zhewen tried to defend himself.
"Not yet? You two got into bed, right?" She said sourly, "She's the daughter of a high-ranking official from the province. You should be careful, don't cause any trouble."
Sun Zhewen widened his eyes in surprise, "How did you know?"
"Hmph, if you didn't do it, how would I know?" Chen Qingyan raised her chin proudly.
"You're terrifying," Sun Zhewen couldn't help but exclaim.
"You're not happy?" Chen Qingyan raised her eyebrows, her tone threatening.
"No, I just think… how could you be so magnanimous?" Sun Zhewen cautiously observed her expression.
