CHAPTER 9: DECEMBER'S PRESSURE
POV: Ivyn Mikaelson
December in the Valley means Christmas lights on palm trees and finals week anxiety bleeding into every classroom. Three months of Cobra Kai, and my reflection barely recognizes me.
[TRAINING MILESTONE REACHED:]
[JAB: 520/1000 XP (Proficient)]
[CROSS: 480/1000 XP (Competent)]
[ROUNDHOUSE (LOW): 315/1000 XP (Competent)]
[ROUNDHOUSE (MID): 280/1000 XP (Beginner)]
[STRENGTH (UPPER): 32/100]
[SPEED (HAND): 35/100]
[ENDURANCE (CARDIO): 38/100]
[BALANCE: 35/100]
[TOTAL COMBAT XP: 8,247]
Numbers don't capture reality. I move differently now. Carry myself with unconscious confidence that makes people step aside in hallways. My secret is becoming harder to keep when my body advertises the training I'm supposedly hiding.
Sam noticed the muscle definition last week. Fingers tracing my shoulders during a makeout session in her car, question marks in her eyes she didn't voice.
Daniel noticed when I instinctively fell into a fighting stance after he startled me at their house. The way his expression shifted from casual to calculating.
And Johnny noticed everything. Always watching. Always assessing.
Which is why my heart rate spikes when he calls me out during class.
"Mikaelson. Center mat. We're sparring."
Not a request. The other students—Miguel, Aisha, Eli, and three newer members—form a circle. Arena mentality. Blood sport anticipation.
"This is a test," I think. "He's trying to figure out how much I actually know."
We bow. Johnny doesn't hold back.
He comes at me fast, jab-cross combination that would drop most students. I slip outside, check his follow-up hook with my forearm, and the impact travels up my bones like electricity.
[COMBAT ANALYSIS: ACTIVE]
[OPPONENT: Johnny Lawrence]
[SKILL LEVEL: Master (85/100)]
[RECOMMENDATION: Survive. Learn. Do not win.]
I focus on defense. Using Tactical Mind to read his patterns. The way his shoulder telegraphs the cross. How his weight shifts before the roundhouse. Small inefficiencies even masters have.
He lands a body shot that folds me. Leg kick that makes my thigh go numb. Hook that glances off my guard but still rattles my brain.
But I'm learning. Adapting. The System tracks damage taken while logging his technique for future study.
Then I see it. Opening. His jab comes slightly wide, guard dropping fractionally as he resets.
I slip outside and counter. Clean jab to the solar plexus.
Johnny's head snaps back. Not hard. But enough.
The dojo goes silent.
He stops. Breathing hard. Eyes bright with something between suspicion and excitement.
"Where'd you learn that counter?"
My mouth is dry. "You taught it last week, Sensei. Slip outside, jab to the solar plexus."
"I taught the technique." He steps closer. "I didn't teach you to read my tells and time it perfectly."
The accusation hangs in the air. Every student watching. Miguel's face unreadable. Aisha curious. Eli nervous.
I make a split-second decision. Lean into the mystery rather than deny it.
"I watch everything. Every technique you teach. Every correction you make. Every fight video I can find online." Truth wrapped in partial disclosure. "I study this like my life depends on it because maybe it does."
Johnny stares at me for a long moment. Then grins. Dangerous and pleased.
"Good. Intensity matters. But you're still too slow—you think too much. Need to turn knowledge into instinct."
He claps my shoulder once. Dismissal. The class continues.
But I catch Miguel's expression. Pride mixed with something else. Something that looks like envy.
[RELATIONSHIP UPDATE: MIGUEL DIAZ]
[Status: Close Friend → Close Friend (Competitive Edge Emerging)]
[WARNING: Rivalry dynamics developing]
After class, in the parking lot, I find Eli standing alone. First day. Hair forward. Shoulders hunched. Body language screaming please don't notice me.
"First day's always the hardest."
He jumps. Looks at me with desperate hope.
"Does it get easier?"
"Getting your ass kicked? No." I lean against my car. "Caring that your ass is getting kicked? Yeah, that changes."
He nods. Processing.
"Listen." I measure my words carefully. "Sensei's going to push you to change. To become something different. That's good. But don't lose yourself chasing someone else's idea of strength. Real power is choosing who you become."
Eli doesn't quite understand yet. But he stores the words. I can see it in how his expression shifts.
Over the following weeks, I watch the transformation begin. He cuts his hair into a mohawk. Aisha suggests he wear it up. The tentative emergence of someone louder. Bolder.
During one class, Miguel points at him and laughs. "Dude, you look like a hawk."
Johnny latches onto it immediately. "Hawk! That's a predator name. That's what you are now—a predator, not prey."
The kid glows under the attention. And I see the double-edged sword being forged.
"I can guide this better," I tell myself. "I can prevent the worst outcomes."
The System offers no reassurance.
Finals week hits like a tactical assault.
AP Literature essay on existentialism. Calculus exam that makes my brain hurt. Physics practical. History research paper. Spanish oral presentation. Gym fitness test.
Plus daily training at Cobra Kai. Plus Daily Quests. Plus studying fight footage until my eyes blur.
The library at 11 PM. Surrounded by textbooks. Energy drink casualties littering the table. My ribs ache from sparring, bruises darkening under my shirt.
Sam finds me like this. Concern written across her face.
"Ivyn, you look exhausted. Are you okay?"
[CURRENT STATUS:]
[STRESS: 85/100 (CRITICAL)]
[FATIGUE: 78/100 (SEVERE PENALTIES ACTIVE)]
[FOCUS: 65/100 (-15 from exhaustion)]
[RECOMMENDATION: Rest immediately]
"I'm fine. Just a lot on my plate."
She sits across from me. "You're not fine. You've been pushing yourself too hard—whatever this gym thing is, it's consuming you. I'm worried."
The concern is genuine. Loving. And I know I should scale back. Be more balanced.
But the ghost of Miguel's fall haunts every decision.
"I need this. The training. The improvement. The feeling of getting stronger." The words come out raw. "My whole life I've been at the mercy of circumstances—foster care, poverty, whatever adults decided was best for me. This is the first thing I've controlled."
Sam's empathy wins out over concern. She touches my hand across the textbooks.
"Okay. But promise me you'll sleep tonight. And let me help with the studying."
We study together until the library closes. She quizzes me on calculus. I quiz her on literary movements. For a few hours, the compartmentalized lives merge into something whole.
Walking her to her car, she kisses me with unusual intensity.
"I don't know what you're training for, but please be careful. I don't want to lose you to whatever you're chasing."
"You won't," I promise.
"I'm training to save everyone. Especially you."
[ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE MAINTAINED:]
[GPA: 3.8]
[Finals Results: All A's and B's]
[COST: Stress Resistance -8, Time Management +7]
Christmas break arrives like a reprieve.
Mornings at the dojo. Johnny runs us through conditioning that would break professional athletes. Afternoons with Sam—movies, mall, terrible hot chocolate. Evenings alone studying fight footage and completing System quests.
Christmas Eve, and Sam gives me a first edition of Camus's The Myth of Sisyphus. Inscription inside: "For the boy who keeps pushing the boulder uphill. Remember to enjoy the descent."
I give her a leather-bound journal. "For the writer you're going to become."
We exchange gifts in her car at a scenic overlook. The moment is so perfectly teenage wholesome that I almost forget the violence I'm preparing for.
Almost.
Because when I get home, the System reminds me.
[STATUS UPDATE:]
[All Valley Tournament: 5 months]
[School Fight (Estimated): 7 months]
[Kreese's Arrival: Unknown timeframe (approaching)]
[Current Combat Rating: 35/100]
[Recommended Rating for Objective Completion: 65/100]
[ANALYSIS: You need to nearly double your combat capability in 5 months while maintaining all other life aspects.]
The math is simple and terrifying.
I accept the challenge the way Sisyphus accepts the boulder.
And begin planning my escalation.
