CHAPTER 11: FRACTURED TRUST
POV: Ivyn Mikaelson
February brings the peculiar tension of relationships in repair. Sam and I are together but careful. Dancing around hurt like learning new choreography after an injury.
She keeps her promise not to ask me to quit Cobra Kai. I keep mine about complete transparency. Show her my training schedule. Explain techniques. Even demonstrate basic moves when she asks with genuine curiosity.
But the elephant in every room is her father's barely-contained rage.
Daniel LaRusso has opinions about Cobra Kai burned into his psyche like brand marks. That dojo destroys people. Johnny Lawrence is irredeemable. Anyone who trains there is complicit in a philosophy of cruelty.
Sam's caught between us. I can see the toll—dark circles under her eyes, tension in her shoulders, the way she flinches when her phone rings with her dad's ringtone.
His text arrives on a Tuesday: "We need to talk. LaRusso Auto. 7 PM. Alone."
Not a request. A summons.
The dealership after hours is all shadows and cars that cost more than my entire foster care history. Luxury vehicles gleaming under fluorescent lights. The smell of leather and money.
Daniel waits in his office. Arms crossed. Face carved from stone.
"You lied to my daughter for months."
No greeting. No preamble. Straight to the kill.
"You're training at a dojo that represents everything I've spent my life opposing." He leans forward. "Give me one reason I shouldn't forbid Sam from seeing you."
Something in his self-righteous certainty triggers my own trauma. The response comes out sharper than intended.
"Because Sam's eighteen and makes her own choices? Because forbidding her would push her away from you, not me?" I stand. "Or because maybe your hatred of Cobra Kai says more about your unresolved issues than about what that dojo actually is today?"
Daniel's face hardens dangerously.
"You don't know anything about me or my history."
"I know you let a high school rivalry define forty years of your life." The words pour out, unstoppable. "I know you built this empire but still define yourself by a karate tournament you won as a teenager. And I know you're terrified that Sam training anywhere near Cobra Kai makes her vulnerable to something you experienced."
His composure cracks. Voice dropping to something more dangerous than shouting.
"John Kreese nearly destroyed me. That dojo's philosophy—'strike first, strike hard, no mercy'—creates monsters. Johnny Lawrence was one of them."
"Was. Past tense." I meet his eyes. "He's different now. Broken. Trying to rebuild. Teaching kids who need someone to believe in them."
"You're naive."
"Maybe. But I'm not asking you to forgive your past. I'm asking you to let Sam have her own relationship with me that isn't defined by your trauma."
We stare at each other. Two stubborn people refusing to yield.
Finally, Daniel speaks quietly. "If you hurt my daughter again—through lies, through Cobra Kai violence, through anything—I will make you regret it. Am I clear?"
"Crystal." I take a breath. "And Mr. LaRusso? I love your daughter. That's not strategy or manipulation. It's just true."
His expression shifts microscopically. Not approval. But recognition that I'm being genuine.
"Then prove it by being worthy of that love."
[REPUTATION UPDATE: DANIEL LARUSSO]
[Status: -5 → +5 (Hostile to Grudging Neutral)]
[WARNING: Relationship remains fragile. One misstep could destroy progress.]
Valentine's Day approaches. I'm broke. But I spend a week creating something that doesn't require money.
A hand-drawn map of "Our Valley." Every place that matters to us marked with care. The library table where we first talked. The overlook where we had our first kiss. The coffee shop where we studied for finals. Even the LaRusso dojo parking lot where Daniel gave me the trust speech.
Each location has a note.
"Where I learned your favorite quote."
"Where you taught me that silence can be comfortable."
"Where I promised to be honest."
It's sentimental. Earnest. Would be embarrassing if it weren't genuine.
I present it to her in the library on Valentine's Day. She stares for a full minute before tears start falling.
"This is..." Her voice breaks. "Ivyn, this is perfect."
"I wanted to show you that I pay attention. That the time we've spent together isn't just backdrop—it's the story."
She kisses me. Properly this time. Without the careful distance that's characterized our interactions since the revelation.
Something clicks back into place.
[RELATIONSHIP MILESTONE:]
[SAM LARUSSO: Girlfriend (Trust Rebuilding: 45/100)]
[Progress: Significant. Relationship stabilizing.]
Not perfect. But functional. Healing.
That evening, Amanda insists we come for dinner. Daniel is civil. Asks about school. College plans. Things that aren't about Cobra Kai.
When we leave, Amanda whispers to me: "You're good for her. Keep being patient with Daniel—he'll come around."
It's not forgiveness. But it's progress.
At Cobra Kai, the Valentine's lightheartedness doesn't penetrate.
Johnny's pushing us brutally hard. Two hours of conditioning. Technical work. Sparring. The new students drop like flies. But the original core—me, Miguel, Aisha, Hawk—endure through stubbornness.
And cracks are showing.
Hawk's transformation from Eli is complete. Mohawk styled with gel stiff enough to weaponize. Talks constantly about dominance and crushing opponents. His sparring has a vindictive edge.
When a newer student makes a mistake, Hawk laughs. "Pathetic. You're never going to be anything but a punching bag."
Johnny doesn't correct him.
That's the problem.
Miguel's noticed I'm receiving more praise. More attention. The competitive dynamic sharpens into something harder.
During our sparring match, he comes at me with genuine intent. Combination that splits my lip. Blood in my mouth, coppery and warm.
"That's what I'm talking about! Killer instinct!" Johnny shouts.
I respond in kind. We trade shots until Johnny stops us.
"Good. You're both ready for real competition now. All Valley's in three months—everyone watching needs to see Cobra Kai's back and we don't fuck around."
After class, Aisha pulls me aside.
"Is it just me, or is this place getting... darker?"
I don't have a good answer. Because she's right.
"Like, we're learning to fight, but are we also learning to be assholes?"
"I don't know." Truth tastes bitter. "But we have to remember why we started. To not be victims. Not to become bullies."
She nods. Unconvinced. Walks away.
[WARNING: DOJO PHILOSOPHY DRIFT]
[Negative Alignment Increasing]
[Intervention Opportunities: Limited]
[Current Cobra Kai Philosophy: 45/100]
[Recommendation: Choose direction carefully]
[QUEST CHOICE PRESENTED:]
[A) Embrace full Cobra Kai philosophy for maximum combat gains]
[B) Resist and attempt to moderate dojo culture (reputation cost)]
[C) Maintain current balance and accept consequences]
I select B.
The harder path. But the right one.
Late February, and I stand at a crossroads I can see clearly but can't navigate easily.
Sam and I are healing. But fragile under her father's disapproval.
Training accelerates toward the tournament. But the dojo's culture slides toward toxic extremes.
Hawk's transformation lacks wisdom. Miguel's competitive drive curdles into jealousy. Johnny's methods are effective but ethically murky.
[CURRENT STATUS:]
[Combat XP: 11,342]
[Strength (Upper): 40/100]
[Speed (Hand): 42/100]
[Endurance: 44/100]
[All Valley Tournament: 13 weeks]
I complete my Daily Quest. Train past exhaustion. Fall asleep reviewing kata videos.
Because progress is the only constant I can control in a world becoming increasingly unpredictable.
