Elisabeth's POV

They say you should be careful what you wish for because you might actually get it. In my case, it wasn't really a wish at all. It was a desperate question that I now regret asking with every fiber of my being.

Those three words Jefferson spoke still haunted me. "I killed them." The confession played on repeat in my mind like a broken record that wouldn't stop spinning. Whatever fragile bond we had managed to build crumbled to dust in that single moment. He walked away without another word, leaving me alone with the terrible truth.

"Why did you have to push him, Elisabeth?" I whispered to myself again, pacing around the empty bedroom. My hands trembled with frustration at my own stupidity.

Five days had passed since that conversation. Five days of complete silence except for his cold, brief texts each morning. "Handling pack business. Won't be back tonight." Always the same message, always about the murders plaguing our community.
