Morris's words weren't loud, but they hit me like a hammer to the chest.
Thinking back, I realized he was right.
Ever since we'd met, he'd always taken my side without question.
Even when I was overseas and some random woman cornered me, screaming that I was a homewrecker, Morris backed me up instantly.
That was years ago.
Morris was recovering in my rental place, healing from his wounds.
Most of his injuries had mended, but his broken bone still needed time.
I was curled up on the couch with a book when someone started pounding on the door. We both figured it was the people hunting Morris.
I motioned for him to hide.
He picked a spot near the entrance where he could still jump out if things went sideways.
The second I cracked the door open, a blonde woman - chunky, furious - smacked me across the face.
The slap caught me completely off guard.
Then she started screaming at me in perfect English, calling me her husband's mistress.
