When Lara's eyes blinked open, the first person they landed on was Curtis.
And the expression on his face was filled with worry.
"Hey," he said softly. She blinked, trying to clear the residual blurriness in her eyes.
"Hi," she croaked back. Her voice was raspy and her body felt like lead.
"How are you feeling? Should I get to the doctor?" he asked. Lara shook her head and took a deep breath before she spoke.
"You can call the doctor later. Right now, we need to...talk," she managed to push out.
Curtis narrowed his eyes on her.
"Absolutely not, Lara. We will have all of our discussions later. When you are better. Right now, you need to save your strength," he stated.
His voice was firm, and resolute. It left no room for contradiction.
Curtis was almost at the door when Lara spoke again.
"I am so sorry," she said. Her voice was lower than a whisper, but they drifted into Curtis's ears nonetheless.
He froze in his steps.
Lara went on.
