I held the trembling child close, feeling his small body gradually relax against mine. His tear-stained face, which had been twisted with terror moments before, slowly softened as sleep finally claimed him.
With careful movements, I lowered the boy back onto the hospital bed, tucking the blanket snugly around his small frame.
"I can't thank you enough for what you did today," the orphanage director whispered, her voice thick with gratitude.
I had done more than just calm the child—I had pulled him back from the brink of death.
"It's my duty. No thanks necessary," I replied quietly.
My military days were behind me, but the vows I'd sworn during my service would bind me until my last breath.
"Please, if he needs anything else, don't hesitate to reach out," I said, handing the director my contact details before stepping out of the infirmary.
The moment I emerged, Grey materialized beside the doorway.
