Jessica's POV
The laughter that erupted from my chest was hollow and bitter, shaking my entire frame as my stomach contracted painfully. Yet tears burned behind my eyes, and my throat felt like someone had shoved a boulder down it.
The fake smile vanished from my face as I whipped around to face Bonita, whose jaw was locked tight with fury.
"Do you hear yourself right now, Bonita?" My voice came out low and dangerous. "Do you have any idea what garbage is coming out of your mouth? You're doing all of this because I was supposedly arrogant and threw it in your face? How exactly did I do that? When you waltzed into my life, I was grieving my mother. I was watching my father slip away from me piece by piece. And you claim I was being arrogant?"
