Chapter 1
( Just like a hurricane hits a city and passes or as a tsunami washes everything in its path so did my true nature do to my life. It took everything that I had wanted my whole life and I helplessly watched as it took everything that I treasured the most away from me.
That night that my whole life was turned upside down would always remain as a wound in my life that would rot because it was left untreated for the longest time. )
"Maya, eat your food." My mother said bringing me back from my world of fantasy.
"I'm eating mom." I said not wanting to put down the book that I was reading.
"You will read your fantasy novels later for now eat your food." My mother said pulling the novel out of my hand.
I had always been a big fan of fantasy novels. I was reading one by my favorite author, Raven . He was always detailed and I hopped that I would get the chance to meet him someday . Perhaps I was too addicted though because I always read a book no matter the situation.
" You have to go with me to the home care tomorrow. We need to visit your grandma. It has been so long since we last visited her." My mom said.
"Mmmh."
"Maya? Are you listening to me? Why do I even bother? " My mom said throwing her arms in the air as a sign that she was resigned.
I hurriedly gulped up the rest of my food and took my novel with me to my room to continue reading. I had just started a new one and I could not hold myself back.
"Maya! Do not forget to wake up early tomorrow so that we can leave in time!" I heard my mom shout as I shut the door behind me.
I got into bed and got comfortable and started reading the book once more. I always imagined what it would be like if I was the main character in one of those fantasy novels. This was something that my mother and my sister always made fun of.
I do not know for how long I read the book but I woke up the following day with the book over my face indicating that I had fallen asleep while still reading it. I put the book on my bed side table and followed the sweet scent of breakfast to the kitchen.
"Good morning mom." I said yawning and scratching my stomach.
"You just woke up? I told you to wake up early yesterday! Do you ever listen to a word I say? You are driving me crazy. Could you at least go and help your sister pack the rest of the things we are bringing your grandma." My mom said yelling half of what she had just said.
"Before breakfast?" I asked pouting.
"You do not have to help. Here have all the food!" My mother yelled tossing the pancakes and sausages my way.
I reached for a glass of juice across the kitchen island and started stuffing my face with the food. I was never the responsible kind. That was my sister's job. I had accepted what they both saw me as. The little irresponsible brat that always lived in her world of fantasy. This had happened after my dad died. Before then he was the only one who supported me and my dreams.
They wanted a responsible adult. When I had sunk into my books after my dad's death, they had made their own image of who I was so I became the character. Perhaps I was overreacting but when you live your whole life in the shadow of another then you realize that no matter how hard you try you will never live up to the perfection they have set.
To me miss perfect was my sister. She was the responsible, obedient and loving daughter. I was always top of my class but who cares about that when your sister has started her own successful business and is on the cover of every magazine in the city. Then she had gotten married into the most affluent family in the country. I could never ever live up to that.
I did not try to.
After taking breakfast, I headed back into my room and got ready for the journey ahead. I packed two books to read on the way over and back. It was bound to be a long drive and I did not want my mother shoving it down my throat just what a loser I was.
"We are leaving in five minutes." I heard my sister yell from the living room as I got dressed.
I put on an overall and a white tee and locked my bedroom door in the way out.
"You are going dressed like that?" My mother asked seemingly disappointed in my choice of dressing.
I did not respond. I mostly never did. I just stared at my outfit and compared it to their glamorous choice of dresses.
"We are just going to see grandma, I do not have to dress fancy." I muttered under my breath.
"What did you say?" My mother asked readying herself for another one of her rants.
"Leave her be mom." My sister intervened.
My mother went completely silent after that. She just nodded and smiled politely at my sister. The mother daughter duo then walked out of the house arm in arm laughing at inside jokes that I seemed to be on the outside of.
I got into the backseat of the car and immediately started reading. My sister who had sent her driver home early that day opened the door to the driver's seat and settled in.
My mother got in the front passenger seat and fastened get seat belt. We drove off immediately and for the next one hour the car was filled with laughter from the mother daughter duo and I sat in the back reading and giggling to myself while eating the snacks that they had packed for the trip.
"I'm getting remarried."
