Chapter 38 - A New Servant

Gacha draws were something that simply couldn't be explained with normal probability theory.

Because based on Shen He's past experience, there were only two possible outcomes: either insane god-tier luck or absolute misery. Either you miraculously pulled something in one shot, or you got nothing but dust.

So Shen He no longer bothered getting his hopes up.

He tapped the ten-roll summon button, then immediately closed the summon screen.

He shut his eyes, waiting for the alert sound that indicated a Servant had appeared.

One minute...

Two minutes...

Ten minutes...

Nothing.

Shen He's breathing turned tight and fast as he opened the summon interface again. As expected, although there was a five-star craft essence and a four-star craft essence, there was no Servant.

"Perfectly normal. Totally normal..." Shen He ground his teeth and hit the ten-roll button a second time. "Again!"

He closed the screen again — he just couldn't bear the stress of watching.

One minute...

Two minutes...

Ten minutes...

Shen He's whole body had gone gray with despair.

"Master." Violet's small hand patted his back gently, her big round eyes practically spelling out the words there, there.

"Aren't there still ten rolls left?" Ryougi Shiki couldn't help speaking up.

"It's useless. When the bad luck really hits, even thirty rolls won't save you, never mind three." Shen He's face drooped like he was at a funeral, yet he still pressed the last ten-roll button.

Maybe because he genuinely had no hope left, he actually watched the summoning circle animation this time.

First one — nothing...

Second — nothing...

Third — four-star guaranteed craft essence.

It's over. Even the pity reward appeared. His luck wasn't just bad — it was charcoal-black today.

Just as Shen He reached the depths of despair—

In an instant, golden light filled the entire screen, accompanied by ethereal, heavenly music.

"Ding—Congratulations! You have successfully summoned the ultra-rare five-star Servant: Jeanne d'Arc."

"—!"

For a moment, Shen He thought he was hallucinating.

"Jeanne! It's JEANNE!!!"

He leapt straight into the air, grabbed Ryougi Shiki in a hug, and babbled incoherently in pure excitement—

—before Shiki executed a perfectly clean shoulder throw and slammed him onto the ground.

"Have you calmed down?"

Her eyes carried a faint but unmistakable threat.

"...Calmed down..."

Shen He lay on the ground gulping for breath, his face still glowing with excitement. He rolled over, jumped to his feet, and straightened himself so quickly his hands nearly left afterimages.

If Ryougi Shiki was a character he used to simply like, then Jeanne was practically his gaming faith. She was the reason for the first time he ever spent over a thousand yuan on a game.

Shen He had imagined every possible Servant he might summon — except Jeanne.Because he didn't dare hope.

Unlike normal Servant summons, Jeanne did not appear instantly.

Instead, a golden magic circle slowly materialized on the ground, very similar to the one from the system interface.

A golden-haired girl holding a banner, clad in silver-white armor and a long purple tabard with a cross motif, gradually took form.

"Servant, Jeanne d'Arc. It is truly an honor to meet you, Master." The girl smiled gently at him.

It's truly an honor to meet you too...

Shen He suddenly felt wrapped in happiness.

As a heroic spirit manifesting in the modern world, Jeanne naturally understood what a Master was, so there was no need to worry she would reject the summon. And with her personality, there was no chance of her being difficult to get along with.

Right now, Jeanne seemed to be processing the information that had been transferred into her mind upon manifestation.

"Ding—Congratulations! You have successfully summoned the three-star Servant: Lelouch vi Britannia."

There was another Servant… and it was Lelouch the Demon King!?

Shen He froze for a moment, but soon identified from the three-dimensional hologram that the black-haired youth was indeed the one who had destroyed the world — and then rebuilt it — Lelouch.

"Incredible…" Jeanne stared dazedly at her own hands. "So I wasn't summoned for a Holy Grail War, but by an eternal contract — to become a Servant belonging solely to you, Master?"

"That's right, Jeanne." Shen He immediately tossed Lelouch aside mentally and reached out, a little nervously, toward the girl before him. "So… I hope you can guide me from here on."

"Mm." Jeanne placed her gloved hand in his. "I am indeed your Servant. Within the limits of my ability, protecting you and guiding you is my duty. So let us work hard together from now on."

Shen He was so touched he nearly cried. This was what a proper Servant should be. Finally, a companion he didn't have to worry about constantly.

At that moment, a hesitant male voice suddenly echoed in Shen He's mind.

"If I accept the summon… what do I gain?"

Lelouch.

Shen He gave Jeanne an apologetic smile and began thinking.

He admired Lelouch when he watched the anime, but summoning him as a Servant…

This was a man of extraordinary intellect, yet someone who believed "if there is no result, then everything is meaningless." He was a pure goal-oriented strategist who would use any means to achieve his ends. Anyone other than his sister could become a pawn. And at the very end, even the sister he loved most — he could bring himself to use his Geass on her.

"You look troubled, Master," Jeanne said softly, noticing his hesitation. "May I offer some humble advice?"

"Of course!" Shen He sighed. "I summoned one more Servant, but I'm hesitating whether to form a contract. Because that person… doesn't have much sense of companionship. And because of the suffering he endured, he carries deep hatred for the world."

In Lelouch's short yet brilliant life, the only person he truly trusted was C.C.

Shen He was almost certain that even if summoned, Lelouch would not regard them as true comrades.

"You mustn't think that way, Master." Jeanne gently shook her head, her long golden hair swaying. "The relationship between Master and Servant is not merely master and familiar. Our interactions include personality, ideals, and convictions. If you cast aside a Servant simply because your ideals differ, then that is not a qualified Master."

"What if…" Shen He looked at her hesitantly. "What if my ideals differ from yours? What if I'm not as righteous as you?"

"Even so, I would not abandon you. I would still fight for you." Jeanne's smile was angelic, her eyes clear as flowing water. "But if Master's actions ever reach a point that I cannot accept… please be prepared for extremely strict guidance. Correcting Master's mistakes is also a Servant's duty."

"…Alright. I understand."

Shen He nodded. He had made up his mind.

"Lelouch." Shen He addressed him directly in his heart. "If you agree to the summon, I will promise to heal your sister — and help you change your world."
