Chapter 40 - Jeanne on the Plane

Although Chaldea didn't have S.H.I.E.L.D.'s sophisticated equipment or manpower, it did have Saiki Kusuo.

So Shen He wasn't worried about locating Captain America. Since S.H.I.E.L.D. had already narrowed the search area, Saiki should be able to find him quickly using clairvoyance.

"Everyone, we'll reach our destination in three hours."

Shen He set the plane to autopilot and stepped out of the cockpit.

Saiki Kusuo and Lelouch had already returned to their respective worlds, so the luxurious private jet now held only three beautiful girls—making it look even more extravagant.

"Jeanne, are you praying?"

Shen He took a chilled bottle of wine from the cabinet and noticed Jeanne's hands were clasped before her chest.

"Yes, I'm praying for a safe journey."Jeanne looked a little tense. "Even though I was granted some modern knowledge when summoned… this is still too unbelievable. How can a giant block of iron fly in the sky?"

"Oh… I almost forgot."

Only now did Shen He remember—Jeanne was a bit afraid of flying.

He took the wine and a few crystal glasses and sat beside her.

"Come to think of it, I dragged you into long-distance travel without giving you any proper rest. My apologies. Can I ask you a few questions?"

Curiosity glimmered in Shen He's eyes. Jeanne had multiple variants, after all. The one before him obviously wasn't Jalter or young Jeanne. But was she the same as the Ruler Jeanne?

"Please ask, Master."

Jeanne nodded lightly. She also wanted to better understand the Master who had summoned her.

"Were you summoned in a spirit form, or did you manifest by possessing someone?"

If she were the Jeanne from the novels, she should've possessed a French village girl named Laeticia.

"Of course I'm an actual Heroic Spirit. Possession usually means the summoning failed in some way," Jeanne replied, slightly puzzled.

"So no possession…" Shen He sounded a little disappointed.

If she weren't possessing someone, then many cute traits were lost—like being a glutton, being a high school girl, being terrible at math… and she couldn't get pregnant either.

Well, the only upside was that a true Heroic Spirit body had some advantages in battle.

"Then… what about your Noble Phantasms?" Shen He asked again, unable to resist.

Although Ryougi Shiki had been turned into a Servant in a previous game, the version he summoned was a normal human girl without any Noble Phantasms.

"Noble Phantasms… it seems I have two." Jeanne answered honestly. "One to protect my allies, and one to burn my enemies. If I use the second, I'll probably disappear for about a day."

Shen He's eyes brightened.

That meant both the in-game "La Grâce de Dieu" and the novel's "La Pucelle – The Crimson Saint" existed in this Jeanne.

He immediately decided: he would focus on strengthening her for a while and raise her level. Although five-stars were notoriously resource-hungry, now that EXP dungeons were open, she was still manageable.

"Master."

At that moment, Violet walked over holding a picture book, gazing up at Shen He.

She could already speak a good number of words and recognize many characters, though she still didn't like talking much.

Shen He understood her instantly.

"All right. While we have time, I'll teach you more characters."He lifted Violet onto his lap and opened the book.

Because he was Chinese, Shen He always taught Violet Mandarin first, then English. All their teaching materials were Chinese stories.

Jeanne looked over as Shen He taught her to read. Her hearing sharpened unconsciously, her gaze drawn to the pages. Without realizing it, she leaned closer… and closer.

"Jeanne?" Shen He froze, unsure what to do with Jeanne practically pressing against him.

He didn't even know where to put his hands.

"Ah—! I—I apologize, Master!"Jeanne shot back to her seat like a startled cat.

"Jeanne… do you also want to learn to read?"

The possibility suddenly struck Shen He. If Jeanne was summoned as a pure Heroic Spirit—not via possession—then aside from the basic modern knowledge implanted during summoning, her education would still be that of a medieval village girl.

"T-that… I suppose…" Jeanne lowered her head, blushing furiously. "I-It would be unacceptable to be illiterate, wouldn't it…"

Violet blinked and nudged her picture book halfway toward Jeanne. Her little hand tapped Jeanne's palm.

"T-Together."

"Really? Would—wouldn't that be too much trouble?"

Though she said that, Jeanne stared at Shen He with obvious anticipation.

"Teaching two people isn't much different from teaching one." Shen He could only smile warmly.

The initial excitement of summoning Jeanne had faded, replaced with growing familiarity.

There was plenty of time ahead to get to know each other—but still—

Being able to summon Jeanne was truly wonderful.

Tony's private jet was unlike those of ordinary billionaires. After his modifications, it could maintain stable supersonic travel. So in just four or five hours, the group crossed half the planet and reached the Arctic ice fields.

It was Shen He's first time in the Arctic. Temperatures dozens of degrees below zero, along with howling snow and wind, could easily kill a normal person. But no one here was "normal."

Even Violet simply changed into an adorable, puffy coat and was ready to step into the storm.

"This should be the general area. Looks like our luck isn't great. Shiki, stay in the plane and keep watch." Shen He sighed at the blizzard outside the window.

If Tony's plane weren't powerful enough, they wouldn't have been able to land at all. Even now, they still had to leave someone behind. Without the plane, they'd never make it back.

"Okay." Ryougi Shiki nodded.

She had come mainly to help clear dungeons anyway—no one knew how many days the search might take.

After several level-ups, her injuries had mostly healed.

So Shen He and the others geared up and stepped into the raging storm.

Ryougi Shiki glanced around the now-empty cabin, grabbed a bottle of water, and returned to her seat.

Aside from battle and training, she never knew what to do when alone… or rather, she didn't know what she wanted to do, and didn't want to do anything.

She sat in that still, quiet state until—

Bang!

A heavy impact slammed into the roof of the plane, as though something massive had struck it.

Shiki grabbed her katana instantly. She glanced at the communicator on the table, hesitated for a moment, then picked it up and slipped it into her clothes. Then she opened the hatch and leapt out in a flash of red.

And there she saw…A massive… dog?
