Late January
The video visit with Margaret was scheduled for a Saturday afternoon, which meant we all had time to be anxious about it.
"Do I look okay?" Maya asked for the fifth time, changing her shirt again.
"You look great," I assured her. "But May-May, it's just your mom. She doesn't care what shirt you're wearing."
"I know, but…" She fidgeted with her hair. "I want her to see that I'm doing good. That Kai's taking care of me."
"She can already see that," Kai said from the doorway, looking almost as nervous as Maya. "You're happy and healthy. That's what matters."
"Are you nervous?" Maya asked him.
"Terrified," he admitted. "But in a good way. I think."
We set up the laptop at the kitchen table, all three of us crowded around it like we were about to witness something monumental. Which, in a way, we were.
Margaret appeared on screen at exactly 2 PM, and Maya's face immediately lit up.
"Mom!"
