Cherreads

Chapter 164 - IPL 2011 - 12

The fireworks had ceased, leaving trails of grey smoke drifting across the floodlights of the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium. The deafening roar of the victory moment had mellowed into a rhythmic, celebratory thrum. The yellow flags of Chennai were lowered, replaced by the frenzied waving of the Deccan Chargers' blue and silver.

On the outfield, the Chargers were still in a huddle, a knot of bodies jumping and screaming. Siddanth Deva was at the bottom of the pile, his jersey torn, his hair a mess, laughing as Dale Steyn poured a bottle of water over his head.

The groundsmen, efficient and invisible, had set up the presentation podium in record time. It stood in the center of the pitch—a stage for the victors, glowing under the spotlights. The silverware was arranged: the medals, the individual trophies, and in the center, the golden globe of the IPL Trophy.

Ravi Shastri, the voice of the tournament, stood ready. He adjusted his microphone, smoothed his tie, and looked at the camera. He knew the gravity of the moment. This wasn't just a cricket match; it was the consecration of a new era.

"Ladies and Gentlemen!" Shastri's voice boomed through the PA system, cutting through the celebrations. "We are at the Chepauk. We have witnessed a heist. We have witnessed a miracle. But now, it is time to honor the heroes."

The crowd cheered, a mix of gracious CSK fans acknowledging greatness and ecstatic DC fans losing their minds.

Shastri went through the formalities. MS Dhoni and his team collected the runners-up medals. The Chennai crowd gave their Thala a standing ovation, chanting his name even in defeat. Dhoni smiled, accepting the cheque, his demeanor as calm as ever.

Then came the individual awards. It was about to become the 'Siddanth Deva Show'.

"The winner of the Purple Cap for the leading wicket-taker of the tournament... with 32 wickets... SIDDANTH DEVA!"

Deva jogged up the steps. He accepted the purple cap, placing it over his messy hair. He had taken two wickets in the final to seal the tally.

Shastri held the mic tighter, his voice rising in excitement. "And now, for the leading run-scorer. With a match-winning 127 tonight, he has overtaken Chris Gayle to finish with 614 runs! The winner of the Orange Cap... SIDDANTH DEVA!"

The stadium erupted. Deva accepted the orange cap, holding it in his other hand. It was unprecedented.

"And finally," Shastri paused for effect, looking at the history books being rewritten in real-time. "For scoring 614 runs, taking 32 wickets, and becoming the first player in history to win the Orange Cap, the Purple Cap, and the IPL Trophy in the same season... The Player of the Tournament... The Most Valuable Player... SIDDANTH DEVA!"

It was a clean sweep. The Triple Crown. The crowd roared. It was Deva's night. He stood on the podium, his arms full of trophies, caps perched precariously on his head, looking almost embarrassed by the riches.

Shastri beckoned him closer. Deva handed the trophies to an assistant and stepped up to the microphone.

"Sid," Shastri began, shaking his head in disbelief. "I have to pinch myself. Let's look at your year. You won the World Cup in April. You won the Man of the Match in the World Cup Final. You just won the IPL. You have the Orange Cap. You have the Purple Cap. You are the Champion. You are 20 years old. Tell me, are you living in a dream? How does it feel?"

Deva wiped the sweat from his forehead. He looked at the camera, his eyes shining.

"It feels surreal, Ravi bhai," Deva admitted, his voice slightly hoarse from screaming. "To be honest, I think this is the best year of my cricketing career so far. Maybe the best year of my life. To hold the Orange and Purple caps... I never played for stats, I just played to win. But to have them both, and the big trophy? That is special. And it was all because of the support—my family sitting up there in the box, my friends at home, and these guys..." He pointed to the team huddled below. "My teammates. They let me be myself."

Shastri nodded. "Let's talk about the match. We need to discuss the match. In the 15th over, you were 115 for 4. The target was 198. The equation was 83 runs needed off 30 balls. The win predictor on the big screen showed CSK 92%, Deccan Chargers 8%. What was going through your mind at that specific moment? Did you think it was over?"

The stadium went silent, hanging on his answer.

Deva smiled. It was the same calm smile he had worn before hitting the final six.

"Ravi bhai," Deva said softly. "For me, percentages are just numbers on a screen. Cricket is played on the grass. My philosophy is simple: Until the last ball is bowled, the game is still in your hands."

The crowd cheered at the statement.

"I knew the equation was tough," Deva continued. "But I also knew my strengths. I knew the dimensions of the ground. I knew the dew was helping the ball skid on. I told myself, 'If I stay, we win.' I broke it down. One over at a time. One bowler at a time. When you stop looking at the mountain and start looking at the next step, the climb becomes easier. The results... well, they showed themselves."

"They certainly did!" Shastri exclaimed. "That 17th over against Albie Morkel. Five sixes. That was the turning point. Was that planned?"

"It was calculated aggression," Deva explained. "We needed a big over. Albie missed his lengths slightly, and I just trusted my hands. Once the first two went for six, I decided to go for the kill. You have to take risks to win finals."

"And the scoop shot to win it?" Shastri asked. "Against Bravo? That takes nerves of steel."

Deva chuckled. "Or madness. I saw fine leg was up. I knew Bravo would bowl straight. It was instinct. Glad it came off, otherwise I would have looked very silly."

Shastri laughed. "One last question, Sid. You took over the captaincy mid-season. Big shoes to fill with Sangakkara leaving. How did you handle the pressure of leading a side full of international stars?"

"The boys made it easy," Deva said, gesturing to his team. "When you have legends like Dale Steyn, Cameron White, and JP Duminy, you don't need to tell them what to do. You just give them the ball or the bat and get out of the way. I just steered the ship; they provided the engine. This trophy belongs to them as much as it belongs to me."

"Fantastic," Shastri said, slapping him on the back. "You are a champion in every sense of the word. Congratulations, Siddanth Deva. Go join your team."

Deva walked down the steps. The Deccan Chargers squad had gathered behind the hoarding that read CHAMPIONS - IPL 2011.

They were waiting. Shikhar Dhawan was twirling his mustache. Dale Steyn was bouncing on his toes. Pragyan Ojha was screaming something unintelligible.

Deva walked to the BCCI President, Shashank Manohar.

Manohar smiled, handing him the massive, gold-plated IPL Trophy.

"Well played, son," Manohar said. "History maker."

Deva took the trophy. It was heavy. Heavier than the Man of the Match awards. It felt like holding history.

He turned around. He walked slowly towards his team.

He didn't run. He let the anticipation build. He held the trophy low, near his waist.

Deva reached the center of the group. He crouched low, the trophy touching the grass. The team crouched with him, a coiled spring of energy.

"THREE... TWO... ONE..."

ROAR.

Deva exploded upwards, thrusting the trophy into the night sky.

The fireworks detonated from the roof of the stadium, a cascade of gold and silver rain. The team erupted. Champagne corks flew. Confetti cannons blasted blue and silver paper into the air.

Deva held the trophy for a few seconds, screaming at the sky, letting the moment burn into his memory. Then, he brought it down.

He didn't keep it.

He turned and handed it to Anand Rajan, the young bowler who had stepped up in the Qualifier, and Bharat Chipli, the domestic grinder.

Deva stepped back to the edge of the group. He watched his teammates hoist the cup. He watched Ishant Sharma kiss the metal. He watched Dale Steyn roar with it.

He stood with his hands on his hips, a quiet smile on his face, watching them enjoy their moment. He had done the work. He had carried the load. Now, he could just watch them shine.

This was his team. This was his family. And tonight, they were the Kings of India.

The team began the victory lap.

Deva waved to the Chennai crowd, who, despite their loss, stood and applauded the genius they had witnessed.

He stopped near the VIP box.

He saw Vikram Deva hugging Arjun. He saw Sesikala, waving frantically.

Deva took off his cap. He bowed to them. A deep, respectful bow.

Thank you, he mouthed.

Then, he felt a heavy arm around his shoulder. It was MS Dhoni.

"Enjoy it, Sid," Dhoni said, walking beside him for a moment. "It doesn't happen every day. Orange, Purple, and Gold. You cleaned the shop."

"I learned from the best, Mahi bhai," Deva grinned.

Dhoni laughed. "I think you graduated today."

As Deva walked into the tunnel, leaving the noise and the lights behind, the adrenaline finally began to ebb, allowing his internal interface to flicker to life.

The blue screen hovered in his vision, unnoticed by the cameramen surrounding him.
