Chapter 163 - IPL 2011 - 11

The humid air of Chennai hung heavy over the Chepauk, a thick blanket of anticipation that smelled of salt and adrenaline. As the umpires walked out, the noise level wasn't just loud; it was oppressive. It was a wall of sound designed to intimidate, to suffocate, to remind the visitors that they were trespassing in the Lion's Den.

Ishant Sharma took the new ball for the Deccan Chargers. He marked his run-up, wiping his hands on his trousers. The return of the lanky pacer was a gamble Deva had taken, hoping for extra bounce.

On strike was Murali Vijay, the local boy who knew every blade of grass on this field. At the non-striker's end stood Michael Hussey.

Over 1: Ishant Sharma to Murali Vijay

0.1: Ishant ran in. He hit the deck hard. Back of a length, shaping away.

CSK had won the first phase. The crowd was going berserk. The yellow flags were waving in a synchronized frenzy.

In the dugout, Darren Lehmann looked worried. "They are running away with it, Sid. We need a wicket."

---

As the players caught their breath, the internet caught fire. The timeline was a mix of awe, fear, and memes.

@HarshaBhogle:

"197 in a final! That is a statement. Suresh Raina played the innings of his life today. But Siddanth Deva... that run out of Vijay? He is everywhere! #IPLFinal #CSKvDC"

@ShaneWarne:

"Great recovery from CSK after the early wickets. Raina showed his class. But Deva pulling things back in that 20th over? Nerves of steel. 198 is chaseable but tough. Game on!"

@CSK_BleedYellow:

"THALA FINISH! 🔥 Those last few runs could be the difference. Raina is the Chinna Thala for a reason! 88 runs of pure gold! 💛🦁 #WhistlePodu"

@DevaFanClub:

"198 is big but Deva hai toh mumkin hai! (If Deva is there, it's possible!) #GoChargers"

@AakashChopra:

"Raina's assault on the spinners was the turning point. He took the game away from DC in the middle overs. Ishant's return was mixed, but Steyn and Deva kept fighting. The dew will be key now."

@BollywoodBabe:

"My nails are gone! What a match! Dhoni vs Deva in the final over was intense. Can't wait for the chase! 🏏💥"

Mid-Innings Show:

Ravi Shastri: "198 to win. In a final. Against this bowling attack. Sunny, is it possible?"

Sunil Gavaskar: "It is going to be incredibly difficult. The highest chase in an IPL final is 164. To chase 198, someone needs to play a blinder. Raina was magnificent. Dhoni finished well. Deva picked up wickets, but he went for runs at the end. The pressure is squarely on the Chargers."

Danny Morrison: "If anyone can do it, it's the Devil. But he needs help. Dhawan needs to fire. Sohal needs to fire. They need a flyer in the Powerplay."

Deva walked off the field, wiping his face. He looked at the scoreboard. 198.

He walked past Dhoni.

"Good score," Deva said.

"Good luck," Dhoni smiled.

In the dressing room, the Chargers were silent. 198 felt like 250.

Deva clapped his hands. "Listen up! We scored 206 in the Qualifier. The pitch is good. The dew is there. We can chase this. Shikhar, Sunny... go out there and break the ball."

The second innings was about to begin. The Chargers needed a miracle.

---

Target: 198

Required Run Rate: 9.90

The task was monumental. History was against them. The crowd was against them. And Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the chessmaster of Chennai, was making his moves before a ball was even bowled.

As Shikhar Dhawan and Sunny Sohal walked out to the crease, the humid air of Chepauk felt heavy, suffocating. The yellow flags were waving in a frenzy, creating a strobe-light effect under the floodlights.

Dhoni tossed the new ball not to his pacer, Doug Bollinger, but to his premier spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin.

Over 1: Ashwin to Sohal

0.1: Ashwin started with a slider. Flat, fast, skidding onto the pads.

Sohal defended nervously.

DOT.

0.2: Ashwin tossed it up slightly, teasing the drive.

DOT.

0.3: Pressure. Sohal felt the need to feel bat on ball. He tried to force a shot through the off-side against the spin.

The ball gripped. It stopped on him.

The bat turned in his hand. The ball popped up gently, looping like a gift towards short extra cover.

Suresh Raina moved two steps to his left and pouched it.

Commentary (Ravi Shastri): "What a start for Chennai! Ashwin strikes in the first over! Sunny Sohal succumbs to the pressure and the spin! A duck in the final! The noise in this stadium is deafening!"

WICKET (Sohal 0).

JP Duminy walked out at No. 3. The South African looked calm, but inside, his heart was hammering.

The ball straightened. It beat the inside edge.

THUD.

Pad first. Right in front of middle stump.

Ashwin roared. Dhoni roared. The umpire raised the finger instantly.

Commentary (Laxman Sivaramakrishnan): "Plumb! As plumb as it gets! Dhawan reads it wrong and pays the price! Both openers are back in the hut inside 3 overs! Ashwin is spinning a web around the Chargers!"

WICKET (Dhawan 8).

Score: 12/2.

The silence in the Deccan dugout was absolute. The fortress of 200 was looking miles away. The Chargers were crumbling.

Siddanth Deva walked out at No. 4. Two down for 12 runs. Chasing 198.

He walked to the crease. He didn't look at the crowd. He looked at Duminy.

"JP," Deva said, tapping the pitch. "Forget the target. Forget the rate. Just bat. We need to be here at the 10th over. If we lose another wicket now, we lose the final."

Duminy nodded, wiping sweat from his brow. "Understood. No risks."

What followed was a period of gritty, unglamorous cricket. It was the kind of cricket that doesn't make highlight reels but wins wars.

Dhoni attacked. He brought on Albie Morkel and Suresh Raina. He crowded the bat.

Over 6 (Powerplay End):

Deva drove Morkel for a boundary through covers—a release shot.

They pushed to long-on. One.

They tapped to point. One.

They worked it to fine leg. Two.

They turned the Chepauk pitch into a treadmill. They tested the arms of the CSK fielders.

Commentary (Harsha Bhogle): "This is sensible. This is mature. They are rebuilding the innings brick by brick. The run rate is climbing, yes, it's touching 12, but they are keeping wickets in hand. Deva is batting on 22, Duminy on 25. They are setting a platform."

He got a top edge.

The ball looped up.

Doug Bollinger at short third man moved back and took a simple catch.

Commentary (Shastri): "And that is the end of the resistance! Duminy tries one too many! Ashwin breaks the partnership just as it was becoming dangerous! JP goes for a well-made 44. But is it enough?"

Deva walked to the center of the pitch. He took a deep breath. He looked at the incoming batsman, Bharat Chipli.

He tightened his grip on the bat. The system hummed in the back of his mind.

[System Warning: High Stress Levels Detected.]

The Devil smiled.

"Perfect."
