Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Prologue

December 20, 2015, 8:00 PM

Satou, an ordinary college boy, was coming home from his dorm to celebrate Christmas with his family.

Ah! Another year is almost over, and I haven't even achieved what they wanted. It was the same in pre-high school and high school—I never accomplished anything that would bring a smile to their faces. How many times have I tried? I've lost count, all just for a simple word of praise. I feel so lost right now, wondering how to face them this Christmas Eve. The disappointment and silence we shared at home was what made me decide to study in another city. Another year, another silence, I guess.

Lost in thought, Satou walked slowly, unaware that this trip would be his last before reaching home for Christmas. When he arrived at the station, he headed toward home, but then realized he hadn't bought any gifts for his two siblings. He quickly searched for a store.

Should I buy art supplies for that cheeky sister and a video game console for that bastard brother?

While he was in the shop, a robber entered, holding a knife and a girl hostage, demanding money from the cashier.

I should slowly walk up behind him and try to subdue this robber.

"Slowly, slowly..."

"Ugh, bastard, what are you doing! Let me go! I said, let me go!"

"Just stay still! Do you think I would stand by and watch this happen? Owner, call 911 fast while I'm holding him!"

In the chaos and tension, the robber stabbed Satou.

(The girl screamed, panicking) "Ahhhh! The robber stabbed him!"

My consciousness was fading, and my grip on the robber was slowly weakening.

The robber managed to escape and run away during the confusion.

As I fell, unconscious, I saw people rushing toward me. My strength was ebbing, and my vision blurred as I lay there. I could hear the girl's cries and screams, the sirens of police and ambulances. I knew my time was up, and even though I didn't know the reason, I just wanted to see my family one last time and tell them I was sorry—sorry that I hadn't lived up to their expectations. With that thought, I slowly lost my strength and consciousness, and my eyes closed for the last time.
