Chapter 6 - The First Strike

The afternoon sun slanted through the office windows, casting warm light across Kane Corporation's sleek interiors. Aria Vale sat at her desk, reviewing designs for the next luxury collection, her mind sharp and focused.

Vivienne Wynn, however, was already scheming. She had moved beyond subtle misdirections. Today, she planned a direct strike: rerouting an important client report through the wrong department, hoping to cause confusion and make Aria appear negligent.

Aria sensed the disturbance before it even reached her. The tiniest irregularity in the system alerted her trained eye. She traced the anomaly quickly, a faint smirk tugging at her lips. Predictable, she thought.

With calm precision, she corrected the misrouted files and ensured the client's requests were addressed flawlessly. When the email arrived, it was Aria's version of perfection, leaving no hint of Vivienne's interference.

At that moment, Lucien appeared in the doorway, his dark eyes scanning the office. He had been observing the unfolding events from a distance and couldn't ignore the tension that hung like a silent storm.

"You're incredible," he said softly, stepping closer. "Most people would have panicked. But you…" His gaze lingered on her with an intensity that made her pulse quicken. "You don't just survive chaos. You master it."

Aria allowed herself a faint, measured smile. "Preparation and awareness, Mr. Kane. That's all it takes."

He moved a little closer, his presence commanding yet protective. "I can't let anyone underestimate you. I won't."

Her heart fluttered at the weight in his tone, the subtle mix of concern and admiration. She quickly masked it with calm professionalism. "I appreciate your concern, but I'm quite capable of handling myself."

Lucien studied her for a long moment, as if torn between admiration and an inexplicable longing. "Still… be careful. Not everyone plays fair."

Across the office, Vivienne slammed her planner shut, frustration etched across her face. Her trap had been foiled, yet Aria's composure remained unshaken. She's too clever… too vigilant, Vivienne hissed under her breath. "But this isn't over. Not by far."

Aria leaned back in her chair, eyes closing briefly as a small smile ghosted her lips. Every move she makes, I anticipate. Every step, I counter. And Lucien… he's watching, just where I want him.

The tension between them was subtle, almost invisible to the casual observer, yet it pulsed through the room. Lucien's protective instincts were awakening, and Aria's carefully hidden emotions stirred quietly beneath her controlled exterior.

For now, Aria had won another round, but the war had only begun. And deep inside, a whisper she barely acknowledged echoed in her thoughts: Lucien… one day, you'll understand everything. And when that day comes, nothing will be the same.
