Chapter 9 - Shadows of the Past

The office lights had dimmed to a soft glow as Aria Vale returned to her desk, the hum of computers and the faint scent of coffee her only companions. The quiet was deceptive — beneath it simmered unseen threats, careful schemes, and memories she refused to forget.

She reviewed the day's client responses, her eyes scanning each carefully. Vivienne's fingerprints were everywhere, subtle but unmistakable, from minor delays to misleading notes. Clever, but predictable, Aria thought, lips curving in a ghost of a smile. Every move she makes, I anticipate.

Her assistant, Mia, entered quietly. "Miss Vale, there's a meeting request from Lucien. He wants to discuss a collaboration strategy in his office."

Aria nodded, standing gracefully. "Thank you, Mia. Let him know I'll be there shortly."

Lucien's office was as imposing as ever — sleek lines, polished wood, and a panoramic view of the city. He stood near the window, looking out, but as Aria entered, his attention shifted.

"You're always one step ahead," he remarked, voice low but edged with admiration. "I've seen the subtle traps Vivienne has set today… and yet, you handled them without missing a beat."

Aria inclined her head, expression composed, yet inside, her pulse quickened slightly at his praise. "Experience teaches you to expect the unexpected, Mr. Kane."

He stepped closer, the faintest hesitation in his movement betraying the conflict he rarely showed. "Some people… they underestimate you. They think they can manipulate outcomes, test your limits. But you…" His voice softened. "You're more than I expected."

Her chest fluttered at his tone, the words striking a chord she hadn't expected to feel so acutely. Protective… concerned… watching me…

Aria tilted her head, allowing a small, controlled smile. "It's good to know I'm keeping you on your toes."

Lucien's gaze darkened slightly, something unspoken flickering in his eyes. "It's more than that. I… I can't let anyone harm you, Aria. Not Vivienne, not anyone."

A quiet thrill ran through her. He didn't know her secret, yet his instincts were already protective, drawn to her strength, unaware of the bond they shared. "I assure you," she said softly, "I can handle myself. But… thank you for caring."

Meanwhile, in her suite across the building, Vivienne Wynn paced back and forth, green eyes blazing with fury. Every attempt she had made to undermine Aria had failed. Every subtle sabotage had been countered flawlessly.

"She's too perfect," Vivienne hissed, voice tight with anger. "Too clever. But clever isn't invincible. I will find her weakness… and when I do, Lucien Kane will see who truly deserves him."

Back in Lucien's office, Aria leaned slightly on the desk, careful to maintain her composure, but her heart was quietly alive with the tension of the moment. She could see the flicker of admiration, the trace of personal concern in Lucien's eyes, and she stored it carefully, knowing it was a piece of the game she could use later — or protect, depending on her choices.

The shadows of the past are not gone, she thought. They've only grown sharper. But tonight… tonight, I remain unbroken.
